Happy I found this place

Post by BuffaloAl » Wed Apr 13, 2005 6:29 pm

For the past 2 1/2 years I was thinking I was the only hosehead in existence. I am so glad to have found you. All the topics you bring up and the help you give each other is fantastic. I have even let my kids see me in my mask now ( they are 10 and 13) this is something I avoided for so long, because I didn't want them to be embarassed. If you have adolescent children you know everything embarasses them!

A toast to all of you ( One of those Vanilla Vodkas on the rocks at the moment)

Isn't it odd? We think there is noone like us for miles around. But it's not so. People just don't talk about it or admit it. I don't either. This forum is such a help and a great form of relief.

Liked your description of showing your teenagers!
But you know, that was pretty smart of you. For you never know if one day they might develop this condition. Hope not, certainly. But at least you having this condition educates them, whether or not they realize it or appreciate it now. And even if they don't develop sleep apnea, they'll be so much better informed, and in a position to better help others. So, it's great you've decided to show them. Even if they do get embarrassed.

I've been surprised by the number of people I meet that are either on cpap or experiencing symptoms that they were concerned about but were afraid to pursue. I'm not hesitant about bringing osa up and have sort of made osa awareness a personal mission hoping that someone might seek help after talking about it. I came to treatment the hard way so I figure I might save someone else the trouble!

I am a teacher so as soon as I heard about my sleep study I think I have bored my students to death talking about the consequences of not getting enough sleep. I know that some of them are listening though because they are like I snore a lot too, do u think I need to get checked out, and most are interested when you talk about it.

As I have been doing research, it is amazing what sleep deprivation can do to your body. I am actually reading a book called "Restless Nights" about the history of snoring and sleep apnea and it is actually very interesting even for someone who does not like to read much I am amazed that they started looking at this back in the 1800's but it was not until recent years that they started more and more research on this problem.

Anyway sorry to ramble

Rockside,

You are not rambling! And how wonderful that you are a teacher and in a position to inform so many young people about sleep apnea. Now, if only we can get you to teach more of those doctors!!

Thanks for mentioning that book. I haven't read all that much on the subject. So thanks. I will look for that. ......No wonder you're a teacher!
