Another Positive CPAP Story

Since You Asked
Yes, he’s sleeping better
You published a story in February about one of your editors taking a sleep test, but there was never a follow-up as to what happened with him. What were the results?

— Janice L., Ashland

The story by Mail Tribune news editor Robert Galvin ran on the Life page of Sunday, Feb. 27. We asked him, Janice, to give us an update, and here’s what he said:

"I ... do ... not ... snore!

Sorry about that. The test results showed that I do indeed suffer from sleep apnea. At its deepest concentration, my breathing stopped or slowed to almost a halt 60 times during an hour.

In the Spring, you love the way it feels outside. Ever wish it felt the same way inside?
After a second test, I was fitted for a continuous positive airway pressure device, commonly called a CPAP machine, which I’m told will regulate my breathing and eliminate my non-existent snoring.

The first night wearing the device — akin to an oxygen intake receiver over the nose, with a harness around the head to hold it in place — was a complete success.

On a side note, I was told at the RVMC sleep center that several patients had mentioned the story when they went in for their tests. If we helped encourage them in any way by running the piece, then we did our job.

Thanks again for asking.
