Windows XP tool to resize images to size of Avatars

Post by Bullwinkle » Sat Apr 02, 2005 12:41 am

OK, to branch from the "Curiosity" thread... If you are running Windows XP, you can download a simple image resizer from:

http://sasha.mcreynolds.com/ImageResize ... ySetup.exe

This is a free add-on from Microsquish themselves. Got it directly from the Microsoft site. If you don't trust my copy of it, you can get it directly from them at:

http://download.microsoft.com/download/ ... ySetup.exe

Once you run this from the download (or save it and then explore to the saved file and execute), it will put a new feature into your windows\downloaded installations folder. You don't get a "start" icon with this, you simply pull up "My Computer" and then browse to the image file you want to convert. If you then "right-click" on the image file, you will find that you have a new option named "Resize Pictures".

Now, select that and you get a popup window with some standard size options. Click the "Advanced >>" button in this window, and you will get a couple more options. Click the radio button next to "Custom" and you will then be able to fill in 80 by 80 in the "fits a ___ by ___ screen" fields. Click "OK" and you will find a new copy of your file in the same folder. This copy will be the desired size. If the original file was named "image", the new file will be named "image (Custom)". You can now edit your cpaptalk.com profile and upload your Avatar image from this new 80x80 file.

If you are not running Windows XP, I am still hunting for a good, simple, free utility for Windows 2000, 98, ME, and even 95. If you are running a Mac, you are probably smarter than I am about this stuff. If you are running Linux, then the Gimp can be used to rescale/resize your image to be 80x80(ish).

And, as I stated in the Curiosity thread, if you don't want to mess with this, then PM me your image and I will convert to 80x80 and PM back to you so you can use it as an avatar.

Found a generic one for any windows version

For any windows version, you can get a pretty simple image resizer from:

http://www.mrfreefree.com/free/images/5/#

Scroll down and look for a title named "Mihov Image Resizer". Click the title and download/execute the "ir.exe" file that will come down. I have scanned the download and the resulting executable with Symantec Antivirus using yesterday's virus definitions, and the file appears to be clean.

You will get a "Start menu" icon under a program group named "Mihov Image Resizer". Execute it and you can browse to wherever you have the image file you want to convert. You will need to know if the file is a bmp, jpg, or gif file so that you can select the appropriate tab in the program. If you browser to the correct folder, the tool will only show the files of the corresponding type when you select each of the tabs. Double-click on the image file name in the file selector, and you will get a preview of the image in a separate window. You can then enter "80" in the "Pixels" box and click "Resize" to convert the image. If the file was named "image", you're new 80 pixel avatar file will be named "mini-image" in the same folder. You can then upload that image in the "Profile" page link at the top of the forum pages.

Hopefully, I can!
