C-1 SmartCard Error

Post by CollegeGirl » Sat Feb 03, 2007 3:18 pm

I'm fairly sure I've seen people here say this is just an error denoting a bad smart card - I've been using this one for a year and a half now (without ever erasing data), so I suppose it's time for it to be wearing out a little (or maybe it's actually just filling up and I should try erasing it?).

I must say, being awakened 20, 40, and then 90 minutes after I went to sleep was fun. The first two times I just took out the card and reinserted it, but the last time I gave up and just took it out altogether. Oy.

CG,

Here's what the manual says:

Code:
C1

Label:
SMARTCARD_12C_WRITE_FAIL

User action:
Card inserted upside down. Remove card and insert properly.
Otherwise, card is corrupt and should be reprogrammed.

Somehow, after all this time, I doubt that you've inserted it upside down.

So, I would say to try the "erase" and "setup" options from the Encore Pro card utilities menu.

Best wishes,

Den

Tried it; no luck. I guess it's gone. I feel as if I should give it a proper burial somehow, poor little thing. It has served me well for all this time.

CG,

I just happened to think of something someone wrote once about taking an eraser to the gold plated area that stores the data. It might be worth a try to clean that area.....and then maybe take a little alcohol to it.
I dunno.....probably wouldn't hurt.....what do you have to lose?

Good luck,

Den

Wow - I did that, and put it back into the machine - and no error. Thanks Den! I'll give it another shot tonight.

I've seen this message a lot! It happens when the machine can't read/write the card. On my BiPAP-auto it is an alignment problem. I often have to pull the card back out slightly until the display reads CARD. It truly is annoying when it happens in the middle of the night because, although I can't hear the alarm, my wife can and she grumpily wakes me up and then I have to deal with it.

I used to take the card out every morning and carry it into the kitchen with me, so I suspect that grease or something affected it. Cleaning the card a little seemed to help.

Good luck, Collegegirl. Try cleaning the Smartcard. If that doesn't work, get a new Smartcard. Worst case, send the machine back to get the cardreader fixed/aligned.

Regards,
Bill

Den,
I just had to update you. The card made it through the night without a single error! Truly amazing. Thanks so much. This card might actually make it to the two year mark.

Well, so much for that. Blarg, you can start the pipes back up again. Inserted the card into the reader for the second time since that time it errored out - and this time, the card reader won't recognize it. I insert it, the card reader blinks red only once (never seen that happen before), and that's it. I can't format it, I can't erase it, I can't do anything because the reader doesn't even recognize that it's a smart card. I really, really hope it's only the card (I'm sure it is). Welp, back to getting out the new one.

After working well for most of a year, my smart card has been acting up for maybe 3 or 4 months, in both the CPAP and the smart card reader. I plan to get another card with my next order.

In the meantime, I’ve found that backing the card out of the reader by about 1 mm from the fully-inserted position lets me download data, etc. Sometimes I have to insert it fully and back it out several times in order to get a good alignment.

For the CPAP, I find that inserting the card fully gets me the C-1 error message and the only way to clear it is to remove the card completely. I’ve learned to slowly insert the card while watching the LCD screen and stop when the “CARD” icon shows up on the screen. Then, I have no problems in the middle of the night.

CG,

What happens if you insert the card in the reader before you start up your machine. Try unplugging and re-plugging in the cardreader on the computer.
I have "connectivity issues" with mine. I insert my card before starting my computer. Sometimes the light comes on and sometimes it doesn. If it does, everything is OK.......if it doesn't, I have to unplug and re-plug the USB cable in my computer until the light comes on solid.....green then red.

Best wishes,

Den
