Receding Gums and Sleep Apnea?

Post by roster » Mon Feb 12, 2007 11:05 am

I saw a guy this weekend who told me his sleep apnea story. He has been on cpap 4 years. He went a long time undiagnosed and was in terrible shape. His blood-oxygen level dropped to 50% in the sleep study. His pressure is 18 and he uses c-flex.

Life has improved greatly for him in the last four years. One interesting part was that his gums were badly receding four years ago and his dental hygienist was keeping measurements. Since starting xpap treatment the gums have improved. The hygienist was quite happy at the last office visit and told the guy that his gums were continuing to improve and he no longer had any 'four' and 'five' readings (whatever that means; maybe the gum pocket depth in millimeters?).

My bruxism stopped once I started cpap treatment so I was interested in his "gum story" and have never heard a story like this before. Any comments will be appreciated.

Better 02 = higher hemoglobin = better delivery to all tissues, including gums, etc. Basically, it's healthier!

Interesting news!

My pressure was set at 18 and my o2 level was 42% when sleep lab study was done in November of last year. I have three teeth right now, that the enamel has chipped off in small areas on the surface of the teeth (thought it was age related) and i haven't made it to the Dentist yet. I too was undiagnosed for a long time, wondering now if my teeth or gums are dying or something because of the lack of o2 at night. Need to get to the Dentist soon to check this out.

Thanks Dale
