Very true! My surgeon also made the point, which I also saw in the quoted in so many other words, that just like any other weight loss program, WLS is NOT a cure, but a lifestyle change. There were actually other patients in the office during my visits there that were/have undergone WLS a second, third, even a FOURTH time.

My nutritionist also stressed this as well that once the surgery is done, your eating plan has to change altogether and one needs realistic views toward food and weight loss.

Lori..it's funny you mention that. At a support group meeting pre-op, a woman stood and spoke to everyone about why she chose the Lap Band over bypass. Her reason "If I can't have at least 10 Hershey kisses each night, I don't know what I'd do"..lol..I called my surgeon's office the next morning and told him I decided on the bypass. I NEVER wanted to be like that woman...this was a huge decision for me and I needed all the help I could get! I wish you the very best..I have a few friends sho got the band and are doing extremely well!

AWESOME..SPECIAL you.
Even with surgery it takes a huge amount of dedication and change, doesn't it!

Bookworm funny you mentioned the woman and hershey kisses in your post. I'm hoping to have gastric surgery by summer. I was adamant about having a lap banding done. Then I went to a seminar given by the surgeon and met with him and after listening to all of the pros and cons-I now want to have the lap bypass done. I know myself better than anyone and feel that I'm not regimented enough to have a banding done. I know it's a lifestyle change but... I'm afraid 10 kisses would lead to 20 to 30 etc...
My surgeon is awesome though and I have to meet with the psychologist;nutritionist and lose 5% of my weight before he'll do surgery.

Yep..same here. Had to meet cardiologist, pulmonologist, gastroentorologist, psychiatrist, attend at least two pre-op support group meetings, and lose at least 10lbs and maintain that loss up to and including morning of surgery! It was a very involved process but one I consider well worth it. Good luck to you and feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

I've never had the WLS but a friend of mine did. I know you can only eat small amounts at first but it is possible to slowly stretch that stomach back out. She started at 368 lbs and lost down to being 180 lbs. Then she went through a lot of stress (father died, then mother died, then brother died) and is now back at 304 lbs. You have to really continue to be careful of your eating.
