Terrified I will be forced to stop BiPAP therapy

Post by eoram » Sun Jul 12, 2026 4:35 pm

I am on Day 24 of BiPAP and I am getting awful stomach pains that wake me up from aerophagia. My pressures are low: EPAP 4 IPAP 7. I use a chin strap and cervical collar and HOB elevation. I get aerophagia with my Dreamwear nasal and also my F40 - I don't breathe through my mouth with the F40, at least I don't think I do because my mouth is never dry. I usually use the nasal mask. My AHI is usually 1 or <1.

I felt like I was going to die when I was suffering from sleep apnea. I can't go back to that, I just can't. I have to find a way to make BiPAP work - what else can I do, and please please offer me some hope that this just needs time to get better.

Many thanks.

Which brand and model bipap are you currently using now?
Will it allow you to perhaps reduce the 4 cm EPAP pressure to 3?
The ResMed AirCurve 10 or the latest model 11 I think allows for 3 EPAP when in S or fixed mode. I don't know about other brands.
Then you could try 3/6 or 3/7.....the change from 3 to 4 pressure support (the difference between inhale and exhale) and that little change might be enough to not be getting that air into your stomach.
Might work and of course might not but I would think it would be worth a try if you are able.

What does your doctor say?
