Airsense 11 autoset wireless concerns

Post by TreeCA » Tue Jan 27, 2026 9:39 am

hi all,

Just got my device yesterday, I did not connect it to my own wifi network. yet, after a few minutes, the screen says that it's been updated.
Does it have independent wire connection and will connect to an unknown connection and share my data either with the manufacturer or different healthcare providers without my consent? I was under the impression that over-the-air updates are only possible if you connect to your own network.

thanks in advance!

You were wrong. These machines don't/won't ever connect to a home internet network. These machines will get their updates or transmit data even if you didn't have internet.

It's all done over the cellular data network. Used to be ResMed used T Mobile cellular but I don't remember if they are still using TMobile or if they changed to a different cellular provider. Doesn't really matter...you have zero control over it except you can use airplane mode to prevent any data transmission or updates.

Thank you, Pugsy, for confirming that it autoconnects on its own without using my home network. Maybe that's part of why there is "autoset" in its name. i don't like that. i may just use airplane mode most of the time then. Still, once in a while, i will need to let the machine connect to update the software and at that time, the machine will just transfer all the personal data to them. this is an invasion of privacy, not to mention a security risk in case of a data leak. your name is connected to the serial # when you purchase. so the data is not anonymous.

I did not connect it to my own wifi network
It can't be connected to WiFi
Does it have independent wire connection and will connect to an unknown connection
It will connect to cellular, this is documented in the user manual
...share my data either with the manufacturer or different healthcare providers without my consent?
Your consent was implicitly granted when you started using it without reading the documentation and learning how it behaved
I was under the impression that over-the-air updates are only possible if you connect to your own network
You were wrong

No, the name AutoSet is because Auto-Titrating CPAPs are capable of Auto-Setting the pressure
i may just use airplane mode most of the time
And then the second you turn off Airplane mode, it will upload all your data. This can be prevented, but it's not necessarily easy or intuitive
this is an invasion of privacy
No it's not, especially when it's behavior is explain, you can turn it off, and you consented. If it were, HIPAA would have forced ResMed to discontinue their practice (in the USA) years ago
not to mention a security risk in case of a data leak
We can't have Sandworm learning that your AHI, is now less than 5
your name is connected to the serial # when you purchase. so the data is not anonymous.
While technically true (sometimes), practically no.

I can guarentee that ResMed is completely unaware of who is using my machine. And I don't give a shit if they did.

So far I think the AirSense 11 as I just got mine yesterday is pretty awesome. I don’t have any concerns with wireless. I think it just does what it was made to do.

The AirSense 11 has a built in cellular modem, so it does not need your home WiFi to receive updates or send basic usage data. It connects through a mobile network to ResMed’s servers, which is how providers can monitor compliance if your device is registered through a supplier. The update you saw likely came through that cellular connection. If you are concerned, you can check in the clinical menu whether wireless is enabled and speak with your equipment provider about what data sharing is active, but it is not connecting to random networks.

My first Airsense 10 was bought and paid for immediately--I didn't have Medicare then. So I turned on airplane mode and left it on, since I didn't have to prove my usage to insurance.

IF you have Medicare, then make sure the SD card is installed and you can take it to your DME or doctor to prove usage for Medicare or other insurance compliance.

I bought my second Airsense 10 directly from CPAP.com on a great Black Friday sale ($300 brand new--far less than Medi-Care deductibles and co-payments). It doesn't have a modem. I don't care.

Yep. It doesn’t need WiFi it also responds via Bluetooth when it synchs up with the myAir app.
