Sleep apnea as a secondary condition to hypertension and/or tinnitus?

Post by Chuck98104 » Wed Sep 17, 2025 1:00 pm

Hypertension and tinnitus are just two conditions connected to sleep apnea. I’m curious to know if sleep apnea could be a secondary condition to one or both of these two conditions. If so, where can I find the citations? Thank you.

"Multiple large-scale studies have confirmed that obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is an independent risk factor for developing and worsening hypertension (high blood pressure). OSA-related mechanisms, such as sympathetic nervous system activation, inflammation, and oxidative stress, are believed to cause intermittent hypoxia (low oxygen) that leads to sustained daytime hypertension. Treating OSA with interventions like Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) has been shown to improve blood pressure control in many patients."

"Studies confirm a significant link between sleep apnea (SA) and tinnitus, with research showing individuals with sleep apnea are at a higher risk of developing tinnitus. Possible causes for this association include the persistent intermittent hypoxia from sleep apnea damaging the cochlea, long-term exposure to loud snoring sounds contributing to hearing loss, and general sleep disturbances. Severe sleep apnea is particularly linked to a higher risk of tinnitus, and treating sleep apnea can sometimes improve tinnitus symptoms."

I have had tinnitus for 30 years...I was diagnosed about 12 years before I was diagnosed with OSA.

How do you know you didn't have sleep apnea 50 years ago?
