Cancer

Post by jmrob1 » Thu Apr 10, 2025 10:34 am

Hi, I'm new to your chat room. In fact this is my first chat ever. I am a resmed 11 user as well. I have been experiencing the same issues with the water running out and especially the burning smells. I have been trying to deal with the bad burning smell trying different things over the last over 2 yrs. And it seems to have gotten worse and more frequent. However, my question is a bit more serious and I am searching to see if there is a connection with this issue. Surprisingly I was recently diagnosed with Lung Cancer - I have Pulmonary Carcinoid tumors in my Right lung. This is a very rare cancer and I am not a typical Lung cancer candidate. I'm a non-smoker, have not been exposed to any environment type things that could be a catalyst for this type of thing. My concern is that the exposure to this burning smell I get in my nose, which literally causes me to wake up out of a sound sleep because my nose is so irritated and will remain irritated often throughout my day, and smells like burning chemicals is possibly linked. Has anyone been recently diagnosed with lung cancer or experiencing Asma type issues either for the first time or more frequently than usual. It concerns me that this is a machine that literally forces this toxic smelling air into our lungs and surprise surprise when i call for a service on my machine they act like they have not heard of it before and immediately start blaming the supplies not the machine. Maybe it is the supplies but I'd like answers. I am facing serious treatments including surgery to remove the tumors which will impact my quality of life. If you have any type of lung cancer or are experiencing more Asma type symptoms please lets talk. Thanks so much.

Just an assumption on my part, but usually the burning smell comes when you run out of water during the night. The water chamber becomes an empty pot on a hot stove and smells. If this is occuring, lower your humidity. Add a room humidifier is miore humidity is needed. Are you in a very dry area of the country?

I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis, I wish you the best of luck on this.

You're saying that for over two years you've been dealing with bad burning smells coming from your CPAP machine and you are just now getting around to questioning/doing something about it?

That burning smell isn’t normal at all, especially if it’s waking you up and irritating your nose like that. I’ve been using CPAP for years and never had anything close to that. If it’s been going on for 2+ years , nd getting worse, I’d honestly push hard for a full machine replacement, not just supplies. And yeah, given your diagnosis, I’d definitely be questioning if there’s a link. Even if no one else has reported it, doesn't mean it’s not real. Keep documenting everything and maybe try to get the machine tested independently if you can.

The burning smell is just that your humidifier chamber is out of water. You MUST fill it every night. And, while you are at it...........clean it every night too. That chamber is really small - I think intentional by design.

You can turn it off in the settings........or, you can just reduce the intensity in the settings.

Just wondering.........have you ever replaced the chamber? A room humidifier may also be a way to go for you.

I have experienced a burning smell all the time due to a sinus infection. My Dr. figured it out.

I know the empty reservoir and slight burning smell.

Recently I lowered the humidity setting and.... Bingo

No loss of comfort and the reservoir is half full every morning after 7 - 8 + hrs of use

Climate CTRL - Manual
Tube Temp - 18c
Humidity - Level 2

I still get a moderately dry mouth and lips on occasion but I can deal with that.
