Eligible for a New Machine-My Dilemma

Post by RobertS975 » Sun Jun 09, 2024 11:13 am

So as the title states, I am now eligible to get a new CPAP machine courtesy of my insurance company. I have a "large" collection of Air Sense 10 Autosets...one at each of my homes and a machine used exclusively for trips. I also have a decent inventory of climateline hoses and water reservoirs for the AS 10.

So here's my question which seeks your collective wisdom. Are there any cogent reasons to go for an Air Sense 11 against acquiring another new Air Sense 10? My sense over the years of reading this board is that the AS 11 didn't offer anything that was particularly revolutionary vs. the older model.

The end of last year I chose an Airsense 11 to replace my Airsense 10. I did not really give it much though. I do not even remember being offered a chouice.

The slim hoses are the same. not sure about the Climateline. The humidifier tank is different, as is the power connection. i understand there are third part adapters to let you use AirSense 10 power equipment on an Airsense 11.

There really is no reason to go with the Air 11.

You have a ton of supplies and accessories that are Air 10 only.

Since releasing the Air 11, in the few years of the 11, it has received more complaints than the 10's 10 year history.
  • louder
  • lack of accessories
  • leaky hose attachment flaw
  • heating system errors
  • smaller tank, that goes through water faster
  • no swivel on the hose
  • SD card seating issues

My 10 was doing just fine but I kept getting prompt that the motor surpassed its recommended life so I got an 11. I wouldn't bother if I were in your shoes. The 11 has a different climateline hose, filters, and humidifier chamber. The humidifier often runs out of water and is harder to fill to the max line without spilling. Also the hose juncture into the machine doesn't swivel like it does on the 10.

I recommend getting a bi-level titration and make them get you an Aircurve 10 vAuto. I had to pay through the nose for the titration... but I'm sleeping much better now... and since I paid for the titration my PPO deductible is satisfied so I'm paying much less for the Aircurve 10. Also... now I have a vAuto to clone firmware from.

Hopefully by now you've found the replacement motors on Amazon... the 10 series is robust and a proven performer... in addition there are firmware considerations that open this series up (google 'github airbreak' for more). My first 10 is now rebuilt with a new motor and clock battery, thoroughly cleaned, and running vAuto firmware... ready to serve for another 22,000 hours. I have five of these... couldn't pass up the price when Black Friday sale happened on a C2C at our sponsor cpap dot com, so there went 399USD... then Sleeplay had a really silly sale on Elite (*with* modem) for 299USD... both of these also running vAuto. Found a 200USD machine on Craigslist, couldn't pass it up... I am a hoarder I know.

I have the air sense 11 and I do like it over the 10, but I don't use a climate line and I didn't have a big supply of air sense 10 parts/accessories to worry about. For me the EPR function on the air sense 11 is superior to the air sense 10. Breathing through the air sense 11 seems so much more natural than with the 10. Other than that I haven't noticed much of a difference. Air sense 11 has a nice touch screen and sleeker design, but that is just cosmetics. I'm also glad to say that I never got the heating system error that was plaguing air sense 11 users when the machine was first released.

However, if you have a cache of air sense 10 supplies/accessories and you use a heated climate line, you may want to stick with the air sense 10. The climate line on the air sense 11 can become unseated way too easily and cause huge leaking. I have a couple of friends who use the climate line and this irritates them to no end.

The only other thing I missed from the air sense 10 was the hose swivel function. For some reason Resmed decided not keep the swivel for the air sense 11 hose. I'm getting used to not having it now, but that was a sore spot for me.

Good luck!

Mind if I slide in this question about the water tank of the 11. It may seem like a non-issue. When you need water, just fill it. For my use, when I fill it to the max, good for one day. For day two, still good. For day three, I have to fill it even when there is still water in the tank. For day three, there is a chance it may run dry.

I'm not expecting a 1-gallon tank attachment. And I know our individual use are different. Just wondering how long does the tank last for your 11?

The deal breaker for me on the aircurve 11 is the fact that there is no heated hose with oxygen connection available like the ClimateLineAir Oxy for the AC10.

The amount of water used varies with the humidifier setting. Early on, I used a much higher setting with the Airsense 10 and the tank was usually almost empty after one night. Occasionally, it would run out. I use a much lower setting now, so the tank capacity on the Airsense 11 is not an issue for me, The tank is much more difficult to fill without spilling water. I think the flexible rubber attachment could be prone to leakage or wearing out. I am still using my original Airsense 10 on that machine as a spare CPAP.

As Prodigy states, settings matter. Also humidity where you live. If you live in a very dry climate that can make a difference, too.

Hi. Same as you, my tank will last two days with the air sense 11. Third day is iffy as water level gets pretty low, so I fill it to be sure.

I use level 4 humidity. My neck of the woods is dryer in winter and more humidity in the summer months, but I haven't noticed any difference. Still need to fill on day three. I've had my tank run dry before when I had air sense 10 and it smells if it goes too long with no water, so I don't chance day three.

Oh, I would think having an oxygen connection with heated hose would be a "must". Wonder what Resmed was thinking on that?

Thanks for the replies.... I will put in for another AS 10. As I suspected, not only did the AS 11 offer nothing new in a revolutionary way, it sounds like it several ways, it is an evolutionary step backwards.

Now if someone comes out with a machine that has a digital clock and a couple of USB-C ports, that would get my vote!

Just buy a clock with USB ports.
Avoid the insomnia-causing blue light.
Set it to match the time on your cpap.

I think every CPAPer that has obtained a new machine in the past three or so years has faced this dilemma. The S10 and S11 both work in a similar fashion and there isn't much of a benefit in choosing one over the other. You stated you have multiple homes and good insurance coverage. I would get an S11 and use it as your main machine. The S12s, whenever they come out, may use similar filters and other parts as the 11. The S11 may give you slightly more future proofing as a result.

Your S10 could be used at your multiple residences. You really can't lose either way but I would go with the S11.

The S12s,.....
Please, let's not start baseless speculations on the Air 11 follow up.

And ResMed stopped the Sxx branding with the S9.
