Adventures with boiling

Post by stevenal » Wed May 22, 2024 1:21 pm

My Swift FX pillow began to leak around the edges. I could get it to stop, but the slightest movement caused it to start again. Tightening the strap helped only minimally. I pulled out my new spare and all was well. Before sending the old off to the landfill, I decided to try a rejuvenation technique I’ve seen here a few times. Here’s one thread: viewtopic.php?f=1&t=182734&p=1392631#p1392631
So I mixed up some baking soda and water and let er rip. First lesson; a boil over of such a mix causes a big mess. The pillow came out nice and clean, though. No difference in leakage. Upon careful examination of old and new, the new one has a uniform gap between the inner and outer cones all around. The gap on the old gets very thin along the sides. My conclusion is my old pillow was deflating and boiling did not improve the situation. I’m afraid the landfill is still the destination.

I had a similar experience with a F&P Brevida pillow. I didn't try boiling. I just replaced it. I think the problem was a loss of flexibility caused by sublimation of volatile components in the rubber. Boiling could only make it worse.

. . . the rubber . . .
Not rubber, but silicone, please.
There is no rubber (latex) in any cpap equipment, due to allergies.
Simmering silicone parts in water and baking soda can help.
Full or extended boiling might be unwise.
My nuwave induction hob allows better heat control than any other cooktop.
