getting healthy

Post by james123 » Wed Mar 20, 2024 3:22 pm

I have been diagnosed with delusional disorder, ocd, major depressive disorder, history of psychosis, and general anxiety recurrent. Im wondering if my diagnosis of sleep apnea can be treated and fix these problems. Any thoughts would be great!

Welcome! A couple of thoughts about your question. You're going to want to treat your sleep apnea even if it has no effect at all on your mental state. Chronic apnea can increase your risks of several serious physical diseases.

Many people without your diagnoses find that once their apnea is well treated they experience more optimism, energy, resilience, and cognitive capacity.

In addition, there are some correlations between apnea and depression, anxiety, and other disorders. You might want to take a look at this, which focuses on apnea and depression:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5836734/

If you google "apnea" and any of the diagnoses you've received, you'll see some additional links that might be helpful to you. My general impression is that there's good evidence for significant correlations, though no one knows for sure what directions causation works in.

One last thought: obstructive apnea can cause repeated spike of adrenaline throughout the night. That kind of jolting of the body, plus the loss of adequate REM or deep sleep, could, in my own personal opinion, explain at least some of your symptomology. Wouldn't it be great if treating the apnea gave you a boost toward mental health! Fingers crossed.
