Are 02 saturation drops without AHI's normal?

Post by Munterpipe » Mon Aug 14, 2023 2:09 am

I am 37 male with recurring headaches and daytime sleepiness, and recently got a garmin watch, which showed a lot of 02 saturation dips. I got referred to a somnography which showed O2 saturation dips down to 82%, but only 3 AHI. The doctor said that I don't have sleep apnea and that saturation falls like that were normal. Is that true? I have tried holding my breath to get a similar saturation drop when awake and I can't get it below 90! I am worried that the doctor is missing something. What do you guys think? Is saturation drops down to high 70's low 80's something I should be worried about?

Here is a picture of the o2-measurements from my garmin watch.

Let me know if I should post additional information!

For medical tests, a few transient dips may be no big deal if sustained O2 remains acceptable.

As for the Garmin toy:

There are certain limitations that can cause inaccurate measurements. The user’s physical characteristics, fit of the device, and presence of ambient light may impact the readings. . . . Munterpipe, if I were in your position, I'd ask my doctor for a couple of specific things:

1. A copy of the sleep report, where you should be able to find data about how long you spent below several O2 sat benchmarks.

2. A medical-grade O2 monitor that you could wear for at least several days to generate data that might be more reliable than the watch data.

Also, FYI, how you breathe when awake is not the same as when asleep, so testing won't be reliable then.
