Frogler, you're a good friend. I'm so glad you took your friend to the ER.
I'm curious: did he take any Oscar print-outs with him? Or did he (or you) just describe the increase in central apneas and/or the pattern of the flow rate?
Just described it. He was having shortness of breath during the day. The initial diagnosis is that he has an issue with his Mitral valve. Next step is the Right Heart catheter test which he has to wait until early July for.
I just find it so strange that the very day he switched masks this all happened. It's probably a coincidence. But a very strange one.

Thanks for explaining, Frogler. I'm always curious what kind of information doctors pay attention to. It sounds as though your friend had several kinds of symptoms, and I'm glad they're getting attention.

Frogler, if your friend is using the foam mask for comfort, may I suggest the regular f20
cushion--fits the same frame and headgear--but with a padacheek mask liner.
Less expensive in the long run--and possibly nore comfortable.
Comfort can have a huge bearing on sleep quality.

I am more concerned that perhaps because he had so much leaking (had had hooked a neck up to both ends of the tubes so he had very high pressure due to the leaks)
No, this is not the issue, leaks absolutely
DO NOT cause pressure increases.
If leaks are bad enough, auto machines
will REDUCE pressure in an effort to get the mask to seal better, before raising pressure up again.
This is why I love these forums. I always learn something. All this time I thought if you had a leak the machine would raise the pressure to try and compensate for the leak. I had no idea it would actually lower the pressure to try and stop it.

What the machine does is speed up the fan to increase the airflow to compensate for the additional air lost from the leak. If it didn't do that, then pressure would drop. If it increased the airflow too much, then the pressure would increase, and that would not be accurately delivering the desired pressure.
Even fixed pressure machines do that, just like they speed up and slow down the blower to maintain the desired pressure as you inhale (they increase speed) and exhale, (where they decrease speed). If you put your ear up to the machine, you can hear the blower speeding up and slowing down as you breathe. The Philips that I had briefly was so annoying in part because I could hear the rising and falling whine from the motor. The choice was to either stop breathing, or get rid of the machine, I chose the latter.

Not in the least.
Once you said
I talked to his wife today and she described what his breathing I like when he's not wearing the mask and it sounds like textbook Cheyenne Strokes (normal breathing that slowly gets weaker, then stops for a bit and then returns after 20 seconds or so).
you needed to stop doing a Yossarian.
Freeze this moment a little bit longer.
Make each sensation a little bit stronger.
Experience slips away.
