Q# 1: Are aftermarket parts from China via Amazon reliable?
Q# 1: Are aftermarket parts from China via Amazon reliable?
Hi,folks.
Long time no speak. I looked at cpap.com to find out if they had the blower motor for a ResMed s9, which I have been using for probably 10 years. It gave me a message that its motor has reached its life expectancy, and I should ask a service technician about replacement. I expect he'll just say replace the whole unit.
When I looked at cpap.com, what I find are not really parts, but supplies like filters, hoses, masks, etc. Parts are motors, circuit boards, doors, and the like. IMO.
I watched a video about replacing the motor by an Aussie named Nick, and he said aftermarket motors were made to the same specs, and weren't as expensive - if even available - as OEM parts. Googling, I found that Ebay has many "refurb'ed" ResMed motors, but they may be just as close or exceeding the expected life. Checking Amazon, I found what looked to be motors identical to what Nick was suggesting. They do originate in China.
I emailed Nick about reliability and longevity, but got a reply to seek answers from his community forum, which I may. But I figured I'd ask here as well.
I know "China" may set off some, and I'd rather save that discussion for a different post. I'd just like to hear from DIYers who may have replaced their motor, and have input to share.
Thanks,
G00k

Re: Q# 1: Are aftermarket parts from China via Amazon reliable?
It seems like darn near everything is made in China today.
Phones, watches, appliances--turn it over, and read the label.
Odds are, it ain't made here.
No way to tell if Amazon reviews are legit, though.
Some are not--others could be.
If it's parts, selling many--probably OK.
If it's consumer or designer goods--crapshoot.

The only "aftermarket part" that I've ever had experience with (besides hoses and filters) was a 3rd party replacement strap for the P10, and they were *better* than the original Resmed strap, two of 'em for less than the Resmed strap, and they have *worked better*. (less stretching and not returning to length).G00k wrote: ↑Fri May 05, 2023 11:34 amLong time no speak. The only issue with them was that the little slits where you stick the 'arms' of the mask frame were too small, but a tiny snip with a pair of scissors opened 'em up just a little, and they're fine.

Re: Q# 1: Are aftermarket parts from China via Amazon reliable?
The only (maybe) thing is that the buckle is made of hard plastic, not soft siliconeish stuff like the Resmeds are, OTOH so far I've had one of the Resmed 'buckles' rip in half, (and that's without pulling the straps crazy hard or anything.

Depending on the cost/risk ratio, most consumer items are worth a shot.
Yes to computers and cellphones--no to baby formula, pet food, and safety equipment.
