Concentration apneas when awake

Post by Andréa » Tue Jan 10, 2023 10:10 am

Hi!

Happened to lie awake an hour scrolling, with my pap on. I know that I tend to pause breathing when concentrating but AHI 60‽ Should I be worried in any way? As a kid my parents had to remind me to breathe when concentrating, as adult - my husband reminds me. When alone, I seemingly don't breathe.

Your maximum pressure of 10 is not high enough. You can see on your chart that it is trying to go higher to stop the events, but it can't because you blocked it by having a low maximum. Increase the max to 15 and see what happens.

Pressure needs can't be optimally evaluated when just looking at a report generated while a person was awake and never asleep.
You may or may not need more pressure.

Awake breathing flagged events don't mean anything except someone wasn't asleep.

You can't fix/prevent awake breathing irregularities by using more pressure while awake.

Now if your asleep reports look like the above awake report.....different story.

Hi, thanks for answering.

I know that I can't do anything pappy about "apneas" when awake, don't intended to ask for that. Just wondering if you thought that those numbers were alarming although I was having them when awake. You people know so much about breathing in general so I thought I'd just check your thoughts regarding this. I'll keep on (barley) breathing then.

For basic evaluation of sufficient daytime breathing, pulse oximeter would likely be the tool to start with, not a PAP machine.

Many professionals and hobbiests and trained athletes have to be taught to learn to be mindful of their breathing when they hit the zone. Weight lifters, for example, are notorious for pausing their breathing inappropriately.

Concentration is a good thing. But try your best to keep your shoulders relaxed and let the tension in your body go, even when you have your game face on.

No need to worry about daytime breathing, though, since that would likely add to the stress instead of releasing it. No pressure; just in and out.

End of my Captain Obvious commentary. :)

Meantime, I guess you could always adopt this song by Wheat as your theme song:
So breathe for me now
Because I can't find the air . . .

The people who confuse "entomology" and "etymology" really bug me beyond words.

You can't measure apneas when awake - the machine's geared to measure asleep breathing, not awake, and it's unlikely you'd have events when awake in any case.

xPAP device data is only meaningful for autonomous sleep breathing.

Anything scored when you are awake is quite meaningless.
