Weird breathing pattern & New study for new machine

Post by bbridge_GA » Wed Nov 16, 2022 10:20 am

I just downloaded Oscar and uploaded recent data. I saw two days of unusual data and when I took a closer look this is what I saw. Any idea of what this is? Should I talk to my doctor about it? Also, my current machine has 13000 hours on it. Doctor wants a new home sleep study that does not include being on a cpap during the 2 day study. Is an at home study normally done before ordering a new machine even though I have had 3 prior in-lab studies since 2004, throat and sinus surgery in 2006 and use an APAP?

You have massive excessive large leaks...so massive that the machine's ability to sense, respond and record anything accurately and that includes that breathing pattern that really isn't weird with the machine's hands being tied so badly from the large leak.

You gotta figure out how to fix the leaks FIRST before you can even think about evaluating the breathing for weirdness.
Look at the relatively small segment between approx 00:15 and not quite 01:00 when the leak wasn't large...not much happened.
When your leaks are excessive the machine can't do a good job and all sorts of crap happens.
FIX THE LEAK PROBLEM FIRST.

Are you male with facial hair by chance?
Any nasal congestion causing you to mouth breathe?
Having any dry mouth?

The leak line is not included in the charts, but from what I can see, the leak may be so high that none of the breathing data is to be trusted. When posting charts, please use the standard format - see Pugsy's Pointers near the top of the index page.

How would you feel those two days? For me, it would be hell. I would refuse.

Oh....it's included but so far off the charts you can't tell much about it.
The gray areas on the flow rate and such tell us the leaks were massive.

And what is the goal of this fishing expedition you doctor wants to go on????

I would be with CG....refusing the sleep study unless there's a damn good reason for it that satisfies ME.

Thanks for the feedback. I have always had a lot of leaks with my masks unless I strap them down too tight for comfort. I have used a chin strap in the past, but I think I am pretty well trained at keeping my mouth shut. I don't have a dry mouth in the morning. I appreciate the confirmation that the sleep study seems like a pointless exercise. I know that I will be a mental and physical mess if I go two days without cpap. On my one study my AHI was 65 and my oxygen got as low as 68%.... I will look at how the format the data.

It's time to try a different mask. The hunt for the mask that will work best for your face and sleep habits can be frustrating, but once you succeed you'll be glad you worked at it. If you can, try getting masks from online places that have generous return policies.

If you want to check whether you're keeping your mouth closed, you can try tape for a few nights.
