Trying to understand OSCAR

Post by jjStegs » Mon Apr 25, 2022 5:49 pm

Could use some feedback. I've posted before about not being sure if I'm experiencing hypnic jerks or some other neurological disorder, or if its something with my machine or settings. Just at the point of sleep something happens and I'm wide awake. I've described it as a sudden jolt before but also it sometimes feels like what happens when I fall asleep without my CPAP in that my body wakes anytime there's an apnea event. I was on a good streak of going a week or two without it happening but it happened last night and I notice that OSCAR recorded two OA events. Should I set my min higher than 13? I turned off my ramp based on suggestions from here and my sleep doc. Open to suggestions. Trying to rule out issues with settings/machines before going down the neurologist route. I have an AirSense10 now which coincides when all this started happening. Didn't have issues on my SystemOne. Any insight appreciated!

Dog Slobber, in your other thread .. https://www.cpaptalk.com/viewtopic.php? ... 9#p1409639
gave you an excellent idea to try.
Did you ever try it?
I don't know if anything will show on the flow rate but it's about the best chance. You would need to be able to evaluate the breathing that happened just prior to when the "event" happened and to do that you need to be able to know exactly when it happened so you can zoom in and examine each breath leading up to the whatever it is that is happening.

Looking at this report...it's unremarkable and impossible to know what might have happened or didn't happen.

Remember these machines are actually very limited in the data they gather. Almost all the data is airway or breathing related data.

My personal thoughts from what you are saying....hypnic jerks.
But if you could know exactly when it happens and look at the breathing just prior to whatever it was that happened you could see if it is related to breathing or not.
You absolutely have to be able to zoom way in and be able to see each breath though.

this is why it's important to stay in one thread, particularly if you are new. not saying you can't post in other threads, but when it's about your therapy and you are brand new, it's easier to keep track if it's all in one place.

NOT a demand; merely a suggestion.
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

Thanks for the response Pugsy, yes I tried that suggestion last night. It happened a couple of times. I first took the suggestion of someone else and set my min to 15 and EPR to 2, but I felt like that made it worse. I hit stop on the machine, and tried lowering my min to 14 (which is up from 13 from the night before) and turned off EPR. Eventually I was able to sleep without the sudden jolt of waking up. Here's the OSCAR report from last night:

Yes, thank you for the reminder, messed up by not keeping it with my other post but will keep it all in one moving forward.

I was able to follow that advice with hitting stop on the machine so I can see leading up to it. I'm still learning OSCAR and not really sure what the Flow Rate is telling me but this was roughly the moment one of these episodes happened. Again, I'm really just trying to rule out that its not Sleep Apnea or machine related before pursing a neurologist. The sensation is so similar to the times where I've tried to sleep without the machine. Any insight is appreciated
