CPAP at the hospital

Post by loggerhead12 » Sat Mar 19, 2022 1:26 pm

I went in for a spinal fusion last Tuesday. Great hospital by the way, Methodist Hospital for Surgery in Addison. Before the surgery I told the respiratory tech I was a CPAP user. He looked over his glasses at me and said, "Really? Do you really use it?" I kind of laughed and said yes. I chose to bring the Dreamwear nasal gel mask instead of the Bleep because it was going to be on and off so many times.

When I woke up in recovery he had hooked up his gear to my gear, supplementing the air from my machine with 3 liters of O2. Getting the the Dreamware mask on my face was a challenge since he had never seen one and I was still way under the influence. The RT was thrilled at the way the hose came off the top of my head and didn't interfere at all with anything the staff had to do. He hadn't used the Dreamwear line before and really liked it.

For the next four days straight I got to use my own familiar mask and machine day and night. The VAUTO ran like a champ with no hiccups at all. Other than the short walks they let me take it was on my face and blowing. Because of the pain meds I tended to drift off into naps quite often, so it was best just to leave it on.

Some people have had mixed results using their own equipment at hospitals, so I wanted to document this very positive experience. Two thumbs up or Dreamwear, Resmed, and the hospital and staff.

Thanks so much for sharing the information. I’m glad you had a good experience in the hospital, and I hope you’re on the mend!

I was thinking the same thing. Or that's a pic of his DreamWear on his cat.

Hey, let's see what your hair looks like on day 4 of a hospital stay. ;-)

I would prefer to bring my own CPAP in any case. Even more so, I prefer my own mask.

Due to recent supply chain issues, a massive recall of machines, and the repurposing of some machines for the treatment of COVID-19, there is a shortage of CPAP machines. Therefore, a hospital might not have a unit available.

To say nothing of the fact that YOU are the only one using your machine!
