Power Flickering after nightly use

Post by r7bear » Mon Feb 07, 2022 5:01 pm

3 months ago we moved into a new build house and I notice that all the lights on the circuit flicker very faintly on the circuit where I have my C pap plugged in. Since the home is still under warranty, I put in a request and the electrician came out and immediately said it was the cpap causing the flicker in the lights. I purchased a new power supply and still have the same issue. Has anyone else ever noticed a faint flicker on the same circuit as a Resmed 10?

I don't know what CPAP you have, but none of them draw a large amount of power (unless your machine is defective that is).

I had a flickering problem when I first got a CPAP in 1999. The resolution was that the electric utility had to change all the lines on my street! The CPAP was not at fault!

I have never heard of the cpap machine causing flickering of the lights.
Certainly never happened to me.

What about if you take the machine into the kitchen or living room so it's on a different circuit to see if affects the other lights?

Your electrician is feeding you a load of bull. There's *NO WAY POSSIBLE* that it could be the cpap, (unless it's tripping the breaker).

You might need a second opinion from an electrician who isn't paid for by your home warranty company. That sounds pretty fishy.

I second that opinion.
You may have to pay extra for an impartial check, but it's good to know early
if your home warranty is nothing but hot air.

My hubby is an electrician and I help him in his business, I suspect your electrician is jerking you around trying to run out the clock on the warranty. Sadly my husband’s had far to many jobs where he’s had to go in after to fix mistakes made unscrupulous contractors looking to make a quick buck in speck homes. If any client in a new build ever complained of a problem like yours a to my husband he would look for a loose connection somewhere (a loose connection is the most likely culprit). Simply dismissing the problem by claiming it must be the CPAP machine is total BS. My husband would never tell a client it’s unreasonable to expect to plug in a CPAP while the lights are on. Imagine if someone moron wired your entire kitchen on one circuit and told you you have to pick between using you fridge (which draws way more than a cpap) lights, or stove because the way they wired the kitchen on one overloaded circuit.

My advice is to you is to send a carefully worded legal sounding letter certified mail with return receipt insisting they honor the warranty. Be sure to document all your communications.

Test:
Unplug the CPAP. Do the lights still flicker?
YES? It's not the CPAP.

You cannot afford not to get an independent inspection.
If necessary, you may need to hire an attorney to make things right.
