REAL Q - What is a replacement Dreamstation worth?

Post by JLROhio » Mon Jan 31, 2022 3:47 pm

This is a real question.

What is the going price for a replacement Dreamstation CPAP machine?

I have the opportunity to purchase (very cheap) a recalled 5k hour Dreamstation, that had Ozone used in it.

One, I want to open it up, just to see how the ozone usage affected the foam and 2nd, I figured I could register the device & get an eventual replacement to later on sell…thus the ask on how much others would pay for a brand new “REPLACEMENT Philips CPAP machine?

Looking forward to some of the answers and incoming! Haha!!

Prices are crazy..it's worth whatever you are willing to pay for it. Make a lo ball offer.

I can get the 5k hr Philips CPAP for ~$35.

I’m wondering what I could possibly “expect” to sell a replacement machine, after I have the original 5k hr machine replaced?

I don’t think I’ve seen anyone selling one of the new Philips replacement machines (w/the safe foam??). Thus my post asking if anyone has seen anyone selling one of the replaced machines

I think he is wondering what someone would be willing to pay for the replacement DreamStation that he expects to eventually get once he registers the machine and ends up getting it replaced.

I don't think he is asking what the affected machine is worth that he is thinking about buying.

One thing that might affect the price is the replacement machine that he gets....will it be a brand new machine or a refurbished machine.???
Brand new vs refurbished...when they finally start refurbishing machines and sending them out instead of brand new zero hour machines.

How would you know beforehand that the $35 CPAP hadn't already been registered by the seller who perhaps had received a replacement and rather than send the recalled one back to Philips is just trying to make a few bucks. Can't register if it already had been.

Examples of DS2's which were likely replacements....

I already checked the registration site and went through the motions other than the final submit.
I was told by the website, that the machine was affected and to continue through the registration process to complete registration.

Of course, the only way to know for sure, is to ask, if someone else who already registered and got their replacement machine, would try and see if they could re-register their machine? Any error messages pop-up??

Thanks for converting my question to plain English... :)

I was typing my post up earlier on my phone...so it probably did not come out the way I wanted!

You did bring up a good point though about whether one gets a brand-new zero hour machine or one of the refurbished ones that will eventually hit the market and determine resale value. IMO, if Philips ever has any hope of ever recovering from their mess - they better keep sending out zero hour machines as undoubtedly, someone is going to send in a 2k hour machine and get one back with 8k hours!!  That would NOT be good!

One thing I was thinking of doing, is during the registration portion, it asked your job - if I selected Airline Pilot - I'd probably get one rather quickly (and new!)

If you entered a SN and it said proceed, you're probably good to go. I entered my DS1 SN for which I've already received a replacement.

If I had a dreamstation, at $35, I'd get it for parts even if the replacement wasn't forthcoming. Buying it just for the backup power brick is worth it.

Aside from the curiosity factor "want to see if the ozone affected the foam", it looks like the motivation here is to make money.
An apparent intent to fraudulently claim employment as an airplane pilot, is a significant tell.

Sometimes it makes sense to think outside the box.
Even if you don't score a new replacement, the power brick is a prize.
I spent $10 for a sewing machine that was seized up--
but that fancy 3-way cord/speed control fits several different makes.
I win.

Who does a CPAP company think they are in determining who should get a replacement machine before someone else (other than their lawyers recommending certain occupations get a replacement first - to obviously prevent a VERY large lawsuit - imagine if an airplane crash is determined to be partially the cause of tiredness of the Captain - who has not been able to use his/her Philips CPAP due to the recall). I wouldn't exactly call an online form "Fraud" and equate it to some legal instrument.

What's that ole saying?
Don't hate the player, Hate the game.
I'm just playing by their rules.

But I digress. Just for you, I'm going to let this one pass - too many unknowns with the quality of the machine I'd receive and it's eventual value.
(and I'd be worrying after hearing about the next plane crash on the news!)

:D

I don't currently own a DreamStation (ResMed person myself) so I don't need the parts.
I was just looking to do a quick flip with it - Don't even know what I would have gotten for it.

Even a replacement Philips CPAP at this point probably has the value of a Ford Pinto (after the NTSB recall - for those old enough to remember)

What is it about old sewing machines?
They don't really sell well where I'm from and they always come up on Craigslist, Facebook, & auction houses for cheap (<$10).
I'm thinking of picking up some and tearing them down for their parts and the treadle bases (makes for a nice table base).

A Singer Treadle base easily sells for north of $100-150 on eBay (with added shipping).
Certain parts of the old Singer machines are highly sought after as well and can easily sell for more than a few bucks.
