Silverlining Software

Post by Georgia Hosehead » Sun Mar 20, 2005 1:54 pm

Can any of you computer whiz's help me witha problem with using the Silverlining software? First, I installed the software into my "low cost" Dell laptop computer. Then, I found that the cable to connect the PB 420E APAP to the computer, had a 9-pin female connector with two tie-in screws. The Dell has two flat 4-pin receptacles for external input. I've been using these for a printer and for an optical mouse ( I hate the scroll device on the Dell). Is there any solution, other tha to forget using the software to evaluate my progress on the APAP? Thanks! Georgia Hosehead

Adapter

Sounds like you have a USB port on your laptop but no serial port, GH. If so you're going to need an adapter like this:

You can probably find a USB-to-serial adapter at your local computer store. If not, here's the web page I found the above one:

Silverlining

Hi Georgia Hosehead,

Do you have an available USB connection? I will check with my computer expert (my son, the geek), but I think that you can get a serial to USB adapter that may solve your problem. Any other geeks out there want to chime in?

I download every morning. I am going to get another power supply/cord for the machine so that I don't have to unplug the power supply each morning -- from that perspective the smart card would be preferable to hauling the machine in to the computer every AM! The machine must be powered up before it will download. Otherwise it is great!

I've got to run, but will hopefully be seeing my son today to confirm.

Good luck -- the Silverlining software is very cool -- Derek and Mike have got me thinking about how I can mine additional info from it -- it may take me a while as I have a lot on my plate right now.

Sleep well,

Jane

SWS is right (so is RG) The only suggestion I have is to not buy it from TigerDirect.

I've always found the TigerDirect junk to be more or less equivalent to the Best Buy, Office Max, Walmart, or Comp USA junk, Mike. I'm always leary of no-name off-shore-manufactured junk.

However, I've never gotten a bad cable (adapter or otherwise) from any of the above junk peddlers. They're all local stores to me---including TigerDirect. Admittedly it's not a commercial quality adapter cable, but don't you think it should suffice for 420e downloads? Curious. Is there a supplier of consumer-quality cables (versus commercial) that you happen to like above all the rest? Maybe you got victimized by TigerDirect's mail order department (which I have never used since I can walk in)?

Mike, now that you mention it I did have exactly one mail order transaction (versus walk-in) with them over the years. And they royally screwed that order up. I forgot all about that order... It's good you piped in.

Boy, are you jogging my memory---or what's left of it!

Thanks to all for your replies! I've acquired the adapter, but not yet tried it out. Glassgal suggested that the unit must be powered up. Does this mean with power connected or the 420E operating? Georgia Hosehead

Power connected is enough. No need for the cpap to be operated as a cpap.
