He did question the continued viability of Philips/Respironics. I'm kind of wondering about that too. If the replacement machines are also recalled, who would be able to trust anything the company made? Consumers will ask for a different brand next time they replace their machines.
If they agree to aggressive long-term government oversight, that could possibly save them. Since they have such a big market share, they probably won't have to close shop immediately, but they won't be able to continue long-term.
I can see a situation where the American President has to invoke the "Defense Production Act" to force the manufacture of machines to replace the ones still out there.
BTW, I strongly doubt that Philips has made any effort to find unregistered machines by searching for active modems. Doing this might require the cooperation of government and/or private telephone carriers.
