Intro and questions about mask leaking.

Hello Everyone.

My name is Jason and I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea in 2009. I’m aware of the Philips recall, and am working with my provider to find the best course of action. That being said, I don’t really have another choice in the meantime. I have an older machine that mostly works but it is no longer supported technology-wise.

Mine had noise issues for a while but seems to have cleared up with regular filter cleaning. Lately I’ve been having an issue with my mask leaking. It has been disturbing my husband’s sleep too. He is autistic (what was once called Asperger’s, although that term is less acceptable now to many autistic people). That means that he is really sensitive to sounds I don’t notice or can ignore. He says that as we’re going to sleep my mask seems to fit fine, but then ‘something happens’ in the night and he hears a sound like ‘air rushing through a car window’, which wakes him up.

I’m normally a side sleeper, but I do shift positions in the night, so I’m not sure if I’m knocking my mask loose in the process, or if there is something else going on. I replaced my mask about 6 months ago, as part of the troubleshooting when I started having the ‘machine wheezing noise’ issues due to dirty filters.

Any suggestions?

Is your machine the same one you've had since 2009 (not clear from your note, but it would be a first, as most start losing effectiveness after 5 yrs)!

Has your husband tried ear plugs - they do work for many people and he's not the one with a breathing/sleep problem.

I hope you haven't been blocking off the CO2 vents (tiny holes) to lessen the sound, but again, unless you have a different machine - which model of what brand please? - it's hard to advise not having more info.

My apologies, I thought my signature posted. I have a Philips dreamstation 2. It is only 2 years old and has been replaced once already. The older one is a resmed, but I don’t remember the model. I keep the old one as a backup, but it’s like driving on the donut tire instead of replacing the full size one. It’s enough to get you home but not enough for day-in, day-out usage.

He has tried earplugs, but they are a sensory issue for him and make it harder for him to relax and sleep. He uses a CPAP as well but his apnea is not as severe. It’s frustrating for both of us. He realizes that I’m not doing anything consciously but it still wakes him up and his own issues make it difficult for him to get back to sleep.

I haven’t been blocking the holes to my knowledge, but I will double check.

there is a bug in forum software and no one has their equipment showing. best to put it in your signature by manually editing it.

Hate to suggest it, but some have used separate beds (and even rooms) to address either noise, 'air' or movement issues... consideriing your husband's problems, it might be something to think about (for when you're really going to sleep).

How long has this problem been going on? Does it predate the new mask you got 6 months ago?
Which mask are you using??? Brand and model name please.
What is the model name for the older ResMed machine you are using now? It should be somewhere on the face or top of the machine.

The leaks....don't wake you up but do wake hubby up...is that correct?

I’ll look into padacheek. I have it in my signature but I’m not sure why it’s not attaching to my posts. I thought the option is turned on by default.

Your signature is not showing up for some reason or other. When I look at your post in the edit window it does show that the signature should be there...but nothing is there.

I suggest you redo your signature line and make sure you click on "submit" after making changes and lets see if it shows up.

The mask I got 6 months ago is a ResMed Mirage Micro.

The ResMed machine is an Autoset II.

Correct. They wake him and I don’t notice it myself. I’m usually sound asleep.

Ah. My mistake it’s a dreamstation 1. I’ve had it for about two years.

Hopefully you've switched to the backup Resmed, since the DS shouldn't be used if possible.
