Picking my poison . . .

Post by HairyReasoner » Wed Jun 23, 2021 5:54 pm

With both my Dreamstation 1 BIPAP and its predecessor, a System One 760 BIPAP, under a discontinue recommendation, I've had to resort back to an old M series CPAP auto I used prior to the System One machine. Given the age of the M series and the fact I hear a bit of a high pitched whine I can't remember if it made back when I used it, I'm concerned if the M series will make it until I get at least one of the other units repaired/replaced. Without treatment, my AHI is at 120, so I'm a fairly severe case. I have to have something.

If my M series dies, and I can't get a new machine due to them being in short supply, I'm pondering which of the potentially toxin/cancer/foam spewing machines would be safest to go back to.

Should I consider my System One, being older, to have already spewed whatever it's going to into my lungs, and therefore it will be of less further risk to me? Or do I consider the DS1 safer because the foam in the System One is older and might be more likely to be breaking down? I bought the DS1 about 6 or 7 months ago. The System One probably dates back to around 2015 or so. Of course, eventually I'll have to send one in for repair or replacement, and I'll have no choice but to use the other, then get the other one fixed/repaired.

One problem with the System One is the humidifier doesn't work, but it may be the well known problem that might be fixable. I also might get the stand alone Fisher and Paykel humidifier if I had to and give up using the heated hose.

Of course, another option would be to act preemptively and buy another machine now while I still can (if I still can). Assuming I would have to buy out of pocket I would probably have to purchase a CPAP auto, and then have that as my backup machine once the DS1 BIPAP is repaired or replaced.

What would you do?

Have you been using SoClean?

If it were me, and I hadn't been using an Ozone device, I would have no problems using a 7 month old recalled device.

No, I never have used an Ozone device. I also don't live in a high heat high humidity area. That should reduce the risk, but the fact they've told everybody to stop using them, not just those at higher risk, seems to indicate it may still bea problem anyways. I guess I can look at it that I've been using affected machines for the better part of the last 6 or 7 years, so the barn door may be open and all the cattle gone anyway at this point. Maybe the incremental risk of a few extra months is that much.
