Camping question

Post by Mrw » Tue Jun 08, 2021 5:59 am

Hi there

I've spent many hours trying to find a solution to powering my airsense 10 on camping trips where there is no electric hook up available. I've twice had refunds on expensive devices such as Poweroak that are supposed to work, but didn't!

Reading the forums here, it seems an ah35 battery would suit my needs (also a lot cheaper!). I wouln't need more than 3 nights

Please forgive me sounding stupid, but how do you plug something into a car battery or similar? Somebody told me I need a power inverter, but I've spent ages googling it and trying to find the right thing but no joy.

If anyone wants to recommend a particular battery and whatever else I need so I can connect my machine....I will be extremely grateful !

Many thanks
Rick

You have to be handy enuff to build and assemble it. If you are not I recommend buying something already assembled. You will also need the DC power cord for your specific cpap.

I use a jump start battery. They usu. have a USB port to charge cell phone, a light, and an air compressor. Anytime you use battery power turn off the humidifier so the battery will last longer. Use in passover mode.

For more nights assemble more than one or buy more than one.

Most people don't realize that using an inverter depletes a battery faster than plugging directly into the battery. ALL cpaps I have seen have a DC input and anyone using a cpap should have the right DC cord (and a battery backup) for their cpap for when the power goes out.

I bought this on Amazon. I have used it for 3 nights on one charge. It worked great! You will need a DC plug for your cpap that is also sold on Amazon.

This is bad advice. It will work, but it will work poorly.

As others have suggested, you should be using a DC cable, from your CPAP to the battery.

CPAP devices (for the most part) are DC devices.

When you plug an inverter into a battery, the DC current is converted to AC and with that conversion there is power loss. Then the AC power brick converts the AC current back into DC for the CPAP and you have more loss. Between the unnecessary conversion (2 times), there is a lot of wasted charge.

1. 35 AH Deep Cycle is good. Example: https://www.batteriesplus.com/productde ... ladc12=35j

2. ResMed AirSense 10 DC Converter - https://www.1800cpap.com/resmed-dc-conv ... 0-machines

3. A charger for the battery

Here is ResMed's battery guide. You can calculate your machine's power needs. ---> https://document.resmed.com/en-us/docum ... lo_eng.pdf

About the converter, be sure to get the one for your model machine. The one for the ResMed S9 machine will not fit the connection on the machine.

I have this setup with an 18 AH deep cycle battery for one-night power outages.

Thanks mate. Turned out to be USA delivery only. But you set me on the right path - managed to get something very similar for the UK https://www.amazon.co.uk/ALLPOWERS-7800 ... B07DVGYDL5

Mine does two nights (really wanted it to do 3) but I've now bought a foldable 100w solar charger

Rock and bike fest here I come :)
