How does it know?

Post by Thumper1947 » Wed May 12, 2021 5:37 am

I have nights where I feel like I had a good night, had an AHI under 1.0, but had maybe 15-20 VS's and /or VS2's. What is the difference between them and how does the machine know? It is not apparent to me looking at the flow chart on Oscar and my wife says I don't snore since using CPAP. Thanks.

Vibratory snores, determined by analyzing the flow rate.

VS = vibratory snores.
Not necessarily audible, but the machine senses a vibration-like "something",
and the programming only has one way to record it.
Could be a tic, a mosquito, or a hiccup; programming only records something different.

I’ve seen knowledgeable people say VS2 is not clearly defined but PR anywhere and should basically be ignored. It may just indicate a little friction on the hose or some other random perturbation.

Nobody outside of Respironics knows, because they won't tell us.

As to how the machine knows the difference... we don't know that, since we don't know what the differences are, all we know for *certain* is that they're two different data channels on the SD card.

I do know that the VS snores are NOT related to flow rate or the machine analyzing flow rate.
Remember when I used to report large blocks of snores when my little Sarge slept with his chin on me between neck and shoulder.
It was the vibrations of his snores that the machine picked up. Sarge snored something awful and when he was resting on me my machine would pick it up and report it. Now when he slept down by my feet or knees ...he still snored but the machine didn't pick it up.
Some sort of vibration is picked up which is why we often thought that the hose rubbing on something might be factor.
Now how it is picked up...like PR said...Respironics has never told us how or why...or even the difference between VS and VS2.

Proprietary mumbo-jumbo, so we will think they know more than they do.
