Ready to try again

Hi all,

I’m a 67 year-old guy who got my CPAP a good five or six years ago at least, tried it for a few months - not totally consistently but most nights - didn’t reap any benefits, quit, tried again last year with a new nasal pillow mask, once again didn’t sleep any better, and just stopped.

But I want to try again. I have a younger friend who saw I had this hung on my bed post in a Zoom call and he swears by it. Immediately started enjoying really good, long healthy sleeps. I can’t remember my last time.

About eight years ago I had a TURP to improve my flow which I guess I needed. I’d hoped it would help with my sleep. Not much effect. I have to go often at night and I understand that’s apnea-related. I have one of those headsets that fit on the top of your head now.

I’m just worried that this technology won’t ever work for me and I’m doomed to insomnia, the odd night with a sleeping pill-assisted mediocre sleep and that’s about it.

Yet I think of my friend and realize this obviously works for many. So there you go. Any advice would be sincerely welcome.

Can you download Oscar and post results here according to instructions? Once we see what's going on it'll be easier to help you and it could be as easy as tweaking a pressure setting.

What model of which machine do you use? What are pressure settings now? What mask? Do you take any meds?

welcome to the zoo!

in order to help you out, the forum needs some more information from you. one of the biggest questions we'll have is which machine and mask are you using?

my apologies if you filled out your equipment profile already. but the forum software has seen some degradation and the equipment profile doesn't show up as it should. so if you could tell us for now, that would be great.

the reason we need this info is that not everyone uses the same cpap machine. nor do they use the same mask. it will go a long way in giving you helpful advice.

in the mean time, without even knowing the equipment, let me offer this advice. wear the mask while you are doing other things. just routine stuff around the house-reading, doing dishes, vacuuming or what have you. this will help you get used to having the mask on.

i know when i first started, my brain kept wanting to instruct me to take the mask off. "it's trying to kill me!", my brain seemed to be saying. and why not? it's a big adjustment. so try that if you don't mind.

this has been an assumption on my part. maybe that isn't what's bugging you. if not, tell us just what you're problem is with using the equipment.

I did enter it but it didn’t take perhaps. I have a Resmed Air Sense 10 with a Resmed nasal pillow top-of-the-head mask. I actually don’t mind the mask that much. It’s ugly and embarrassing but no one sees it but my wife and colleagues the other day on a zoom call I took on my bed.

Julie, I don’t take meds except a sleeping pill once in a blue moon (one or two a month) if I really want to get some sleep.

Exactly which model name? There are 4 potential choices and it's important to know which one.
OSCAR won't work with the "CPAP" model AirSense 10.

Oh that’s too bad as that IS the model I have.

The CPAP model won't work with OSCAR because it lacks some specific detailed data files needed for OSCAR to work with it but it still has some data available on the machine LCD screen. It's a generic summary data and limited but there is some data.

You need to change it to show the onscreen data if it doesn't already show it.
Essentials needs to be set to "Plus" instead of "On".

So you do have some data available to monitor your therapy but it is going to be limited.
