Another sleep test

Post by sleepcrapnea » Fri Apr 16, 2021 11:06 am

I just did my second sleep test and am hoping I havent stuffed it up again.

I did the first one two years ago. Said I had Ahi of 4.2 per hour. So, I was classed as not having sleep apnea. But, I believe I do have it. I feel the sleep test understated the apneas because out of that 7.5 hours I really slept something like 5 hours. And all that lying in bed wide awake time was not identified I presume.

So, I finally did another one last night .But, as is my primary affliction, I woke far too early, after 5.5 hours and was wide awake unable to sleep again, yet again.

This time though, however, I took the device off about 20 minutes after awakening, not wanting to again lie in bed for a very long time with the device on.

So, I am hoping 5.5 hours sleep, that gives them enough time to do a sleep test properly? Its my typical quantity of sleep anyway. To deliver 77.5 or 8 hours of sleep I would have needed to take a whole sleeping pill rather than half of one. Wishing i had taken a whole one now. But maybe this will be enough time for an accurate test

Why did you get a sleep study? You have said you have a CPAP.

Please keep future posts in the one thread.

Because I was concerned about the accuracy of the first one. I did try a cpap and failed. Partly because I was uncertain I had sleep apnea. Secondly because I have nighttime nasal obstruction making the cpap ineffective. Two simultaneous medical conditions making it hard to work out what is causing sleep problems and what is not or if its both.

So wanted another test to reassess the situaiton. Hopefully it is not botched. but I think it should be better since I turned it off rather than lying in bed for hours awake.

Whether or not you stay in bed awake is not going to have an effect on a vaiid test anyway... they measure sleep breathing, not awake breathing.

He apparently did a home test without EEG leads.

I have seen that in another post of yours. You need to get that taken care of. Your information about Empty Nose Syndrome is out of date. Unless you are seeing a decrepit ENT in the backwoods.

Yep. The ENT did not think ENS was a risk.

Not necessarily. Not all home sleep studies actually monitor sleep status at all. Some of them don't have a clue if someone was asleep or awake.
All depends on which Type of home study was done and did it even measure sleep status or not.
Only Type 2 measures if someone was asleep or not...

OP had a home sleep study....not in a lab where EEG leads are common.
Home studies don't always do the EEG leads which are needed to know for sure if someone is asleep or not.

Home studies may or may not have had the needed EEG leads.
See the different types here and what data is gathered.
http://freecpapadvice.com/home-sleep-tests

It all depends on if he had a Type 2 or maybe a Type 3 home sleep study whether or not the device can distinguish between awake breathing and asleep breathing. If it was a Type 3 home study which is probably the most common then there is zero way to know if someone is asleep or awake.

Ok I did the sleep study again the second night.

This time I took a sleeping pill to make sure I didnt wake up. Slept 8.5 hours then turned the machine off immediately. Should get an accurate study on this one. Also listened to snorelab and counted about 7 of what sounded like hypopneas or apneas over the night. Sent it off. Cant wait to see what the results are.

God I feel great today after taking a whole sleeping pill. I wish I could feel like this every day. This must be how normal people feel. Tolerance is a shame as taking sleeping pills is not something I can do often or they would no longer be effective as a last resort.
