ResMed AirCurve 10 Vauto - Auto Shut Off

Post by FifthAvenue » Sat Feb 20, 2021 6:32 am

Smart start is turned on. Unit starts automatically when masking up. Does not shut off automatically when removing mask. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

This is a problem *some* people experience.

The mask itself seems to be providing enough back-pressure so that the machine can't determine you're no longer attached.

Seems to be reported more by nasal-pillow users (on the smaller side). Any of which had been successfully using SmartStart successfully for a while.

I'm not aware of any workarounds other than turning off with the button, or maybe disconnecting the mask.

Same machine...same problem depending on what mask I use.
It's especially common with a nasal pillow mask at lower pressures but not always low pressures.
With a P10 nasal pillow mask mine doesn't do the auto off like it should but does do it with the Bleep at the same pressures.

All masks have an inherent resistance and with some masks the machine just doesn't notice enough change in resistance once the human has removed the mask to know that the human is no longer attached to kick in the auto off part of SmartStart.

To check to see if it is your mask and pressure combination that is the problem just unhook your mask from the long hose and see how long it takes to auto off. I am betting it won't take long at all. Now if it doesn't auto off with the mask gone...we have a different discussion.

Unhooked mask. Unit continues to run. Removed humidifier unit. Continues to run. Otherwise unit performs well.

Damn. Didn't want to have that different discussion.

Lets go back to the basics and see if we get lucky.

Unplug the machine from the wall outlet for about a minute and then plug it back in and let the system reboot.
Sometimes this will fix weird problems.

Then go into the clinical setup menu are and make sure that SmartStart is indeed enabled.

Then put the mask on and breathe and let it start doing its thing for a couple of minutes. Then remove the mask from your face...give it about 15 seconds to shut off....if it doesn't shut off...then unhook the mask totally from the long hose and give it another 15 seconds or so.

If no joy...then we worry about a sensor malfunction if unhooking the mask from the long hose doesn't let it turn itself off.

How old is the machine? How many run hours on it? Where did you get it?
What mask are you using and what are your pressure settings?
While it probably doesn't affect the overall reliability of the machine if there is a sensor problem...it always makes me nervous because in the back of my mind I wonder what else might be ailing.
For me...if I unhook the mask from the long hose it shuts off so I know the problem is the mask and my pressures used.
I just reach over and push the button to turn it off if I use the P10 mask.

Thanks for all your help. Just be a bad sensor. Unit has 7.5 K hours. Out of warranty. Will live with manual turn off. I have an identical spare unit that functions perfectly.

Why not use the unit that works perfect and relegate the one you're using as spare?

The machine only has two sensors, pressure and airflow. If either of those aren't working, it won't work at all.
