Grieving over friend who died of sleep apnea

Post by kbh209 » Fri Apr 24, 2020 11:13 pm

I'm still processing my thoughts while grieving. I found out today that Wednesday night - early Thursday morning (sometime after midnight) a friend passed away from sleep apnea, according to his wife and family.

I've heard of dying of heart failure due to sleep apnea, and other ailments linked to sleep apnea, but I've not heard of sleep apnea being a direct killer before. Just...sad, terrifying and eye opening at the same time.

Just a reminder we got to take care of ourselves in all aspects of our health to the best we can. :| :(

So sorry to hear you've lost a friend. OSA can put a lot of stress on the body when events are of long duration, along with oxygen deprivation. While most do not go into a crisis, it seems understandable. I lost a friend to central sleep apnea. She knew it was a family trait. She had lost a young adult daughter and niece to it. It was back in the day before ASV machines were even talked about. Like her other family members, one night she went to sleep and didn't wake up. My condolences to you on your sudden and unexpected loss.

So sorry to hear of your loss.

This is fairly rare, but not unheard of in adults. One can stop breathing long enough to suffocate, making Sleep Apnea a direct cause of death.

BTW, SIDS might really be Sleep Apnea.

I just wanted to thank you guys for the condolences. I'm not much of a person who cries but stays deep in thought when something happens or someone passes away. I'm not as deep in thought as I was Friday night. In my personal faith though, I know that even though my friend lived a short life, he's in a better place - the promised land, and that's comforting.

Personally for me it's a wake up call, because of my COVID-19 anxieties, my brain has been trying to decline wearing the mask again, and I gave in for a few nights not sleeping with it on. As soon as I found out about my friend passing of sleep apnea - I knew I couldn't risk that chance anymore. I cannot give into the fear and anxieties that my mind plays on me at times.

This thread got way off topic so I removed all the off topic posts.
I didn't catch it soon enough to warn anyone and I would have removed them anyway out of respect for the OP.

Some of you got suckered by someone whose sole purpose here is to yank some chains.

Probably because you may have quoted the yahoo who went off topic and if I had just edited out his comments then yours wouldn't have made much sense. Miss Emerita also had some comments get removed and there was really nothing wrong with what she said but they were addressed to the yahoo disrupting the thread and taking it side ways.

I tried really hard to just remove the chain yanker's comments but when I looked back there was so much other stuff that simply made no sense and really didn't pertain to the OP's first post at all. Now I might have accidentally zapped a totally innocent person's comments...it was early this morning and amid my first cup of coffee but I tried hard to keep only the posts that were pertinent.
If I did remove something in error...my apologies.

The OP complained about how the thread was going....so I tried to clean it up.

I found it in another similar thread.

My sincere condolences.

As a young father I lost two baby children to SIDS. At that time nobody really knew what caused it. Now many years later I have central sleep apnea. I'm convinced there is a link, but of course there is no way to prove it after all these years. To some extent it doesn't matter - my other children all grew up strong and healthy.
