Used machine purchase questions.

Hi all!

I’m new to this and quite frankly I’m disgusted by the insurance policy I have. They will only allow me to rent the machine for 3 months before I have to purchase it outright! They wanted 120 upfront and another 76 for two months and then 700 after the two months!

Sorry I sound like a kid with a temper tantrum BUT,

I was going thru Craig’s list and Fb market place and found one. The guy said it was barely used. He said it was an airsense 10.

That’s what the insurance was going to have me rent (already discussed it with my DME.

ANYWAY I digress, he sent me a photo of clinical settings to prove it had low hours. (See attached) they aren’t asking for a ton 250$ (first clue some something might be wrong) and my second question what should I be on the lookout for when buying used. He said I can take the hose and Mask if I want it; but that sounds gross.

Their story is his gf had gastric bypass as was afraid to use it. They swear they never smoked in the house (they have kids) and never in the room with it. Any and all I do would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum.

Have him send you a photo of the run hours.
The used hours means nothing...those can be reset to 0 but who knows if the seller knows that or not.
Also a photo of the front lower right section where the full name is shown.

There are 4 different models of ResMed AirSense machines and one you want to totally for sure avoid.

Search YouTube for Check Run Hours Autoset. The screen he showed you is like a trip meter in a car - easily reset. You want the Run Hours which is like an odometer and is in the clinician menu

Beyond that, just buy a new hose and mask, and change the filter.

Avoid the ResMed AirSense 10 CPAP.
The data it collects is extremely limited and pretty much useless.

The best of the models in terms of functions offered would be the AirSense 10 AutoSet for Her....second best is the regular AutoSet.
The Elite is a fixed pressure only machine and while it does offer full data it doesn't offer the auto adjusting functions that might be needed.

If I’m understanding why to avoid the Airsence 10 is because it continues with pressure regardless if there’s a problem or if it’s boot needed it doesn’t auto detect and adjust accordingly is that correct? Sorry this is all foreign and new to me.

You need to stop referring to the line of machine and start using the specific model names, or you will get the wrong device.

These are all AirSense 10s:

ResMed AirSense 10 CPAP (Avoid,it's a brick)
ResMed AirSense 10 Elite (Avoid, it's fixed pressure)
ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet (Great machine)
ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet for Her (Best machine, has one extra mode than AutoSet)

The AirSense 10 CPAP model machine doesn't record efficacy data and that's why we avoid it.
It doesn't even distinguish between central apneas or obstructive apneas and that's a critical issue.

The fact that it is fixed only...minor annoyance...most people could use fixed and get acceptable results if they had to but sometimes it's not a nice option because it can cause problems or is just plain uncomfortable.

Example....I often need pressures of up around 15 during REM stage sleep. REM composes about 20% of the night.
In non REM stage sleep I can get by with around 8 cm pressure...so for 80% of the night I might need around 8 or 9 cm.
If I used a fixed pressure only model machine I would need to use 15 cm all night long to take care of the REM stage sleep needs.
I could do it if I had to but man using 15 cm all night long sure isn't comfortable plus it greatly increases the chances of aerophagia (belly/gas pain) causing problems. Plus it's just plain a lot harder to exhale against 15 cm than it is 8 cm.
I much rather use the lower pressure the 80 % of the night I can use it effectively and let the machine go to 15 only when needed.
A whole lot easier and more comfortable to do.

There are a couple of trustworthy people on here who regularly sell low hour machines. Lsat is one. I got my backup machine from him. You might check to see if he has anything in stock.

There are four models of the Airsense 10, as mentioned above, "CPAP" is one of the models, it's junk, and must be avoided.
