Lots of good comments here. I'd second the suggestion to try smart start. It's in your settings. If all is working properly, your machine will shut off within about 10 seconds when you remove the mask. It will also start within a few seconds after putting the mask on. If you have a hose leak, or a bad seal on the humidifier, the smart start feature may not work properly.

Another idea is to immediately turn the machine off manually when you remove the mask.

The next comment may not apply, but....
If for some reason your smart start isn't working properly, especially if you already had it set to ON, try another hose and verify that the humidifier tub is sealing properly.
If all that is correct, and you find that your smart start IS ON, but not functioning, it is POSSIBLE that you may have a defective machine. I had that happen to my original unit (Resmed Airsense 10 Autoset). I had an unsuccessful repair attempt, and finally a replacement. All is well now. In my case the symptoms were smart start stopped working, and then the unit developed some erratic pressure behavior. Other than that episode, this machine had been excellent, and the replacement unit is fine.

Can someone help me understand why we're discussing Smart Start here? I have a specific issue with noise from the machine that is seemingly random. While I am interested in knowing if there are settings to change that could help with this, I am not seeing anything about Smart Start's ability to assist with this.

If it's being suggested "because it's a good feature to use", that's fine, but I'd like to understand that.

Thanks.

You said: "but I notice that removing my mask in the middle of the night causes a significant amount of "noise" from the machine itself as there is some significant change in the air delivery when there is basically zero back pressure from the mask. "

This suggest to many of us, that smart start may be the issue. (Smart start is a smart off as well as on)

I am not sure what other answer you are looking for. Most other common noise complaints come from the humidifier not being seated correctly or from the hose connections between the machine and the mask or leaks from the mask itself. Play with it during the day. Try to duplicate the problem when you are not half asleep. Maybe you can figure out where the noise is coming from and give us more to go on. Right now you are getting our best guesses given the info you have given us.

Did you look at the table?

It's got the REF number from the back of the machine, AND the entry to pick from the equipment table.
The REF on my machine is 37028. That translates to "ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet CPAP". That isn't an option to choose from in the equipment section. The closest matches are:

ResMed AirSense™ 10 AutoSet™ CPAP Machine with HumidAir™ Heated Humidifier
AirSense™ 10 CPAP Machine with HumidAir™ Heated Humidifier (what's the difference between this one and the one shown prior here?)
AirSense™ 10 AutoSet™ For Her CPAP Machine with HumidAir™ Heated Humidifier
AirSense™ 10 Elite CPAP Machine with HumidAir™ Heated Humidifier

And none of those directly matches the description from the chart. Further, all of them have "with HumidAir™ Heated Humidifier" as part of the description and there is a section in equipment to choose the humidifier (or not). In THAT section, it is referred to as HumidAire and not HumidAir. So, at the very least, choosing the right information to list is not as straightforward as one might expect. It could be a lot cleaner and clearer, including not having a reference to my machine listed twice, in two different ways and maybe even having the reference numbers listed as part of the way to choose the correct machine.
If you are so utterly pedantic that you can't see that:

ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet CPAP

has a better match with

ResMed AirSense™ 10 AutoSet™ CPAP Machine with HumidAir™ Heated Humidifier

than it does to:

AirSense™ 10 CPAP Machine with HumidAir™ Heated Humidifier \\
AirSense™ 10 AutoSet™ For Her CPAP Machine with HumidAir™ Heated Humidifier
AirSense™ 10 Elite CPAP Machine with HumidAir™ Heated Humidifier

then I believe you're beyond my ability to help.

Also, if you can't see the difference between

ResMed AirSense™ 10 AutoSet™ CPAP Machine with HumidAir™ Heated Humidifier
and
AirSense™ 10 CPAP Machine with HumidAir™ Heated Humidifier

I have also stated that it happens at other times when mask removal doesn't occur. That's why I'm trying to understand the suggestion for it.

Pedantic? Because I am trying to provide what was asked for as accurately as possible? I was asked to provide accurate information using a reference table as the starting point. From there, I was left to direct interpretation of a list which I could have done WITHOUT the table.

Roll your eyes all you want - Don't ask for explicit information if you aren't going to appreciate when I take the time to point out that I can't actually do what was asked because of inaccurate references and then asked for guidance on which one was the best match.

I was going to apologize that it apparently confused you so, but since you're the first person ever to have trouble with the fact that there isn't a ™ on the first line (from the chart) and that it only has enough of the entire line to make it unique...

I'm not going to do so.

Cheers, and as they say, have a nice day.

I'm not losing any sleep over you not apologizing. The history of your participation in the threads demonstrates that you are predominantly interested in asserting your superiority to others as opposed to actually being helpful.

I guess I'm done with this site.

sorry to see you go, if you are going.this forum is very much fact based. and going along with this is making sure the nomenclature is correct. i often wish the list from which newbies have to choose their equipment was much easier to navigate. but it is what it is.

it's very important to get these things right in order to educate folks on the proper treatment. different machines have different little quirks about them. so it's important to know.

it won't help at all to tell you this, but you are seriously misjudging palerider through the lens of how the two of you haven't exactly hit it off. many people have gone down the path you've chosen by turning your back on him. trouble with that is, he's one of the two top people here in the forum, knowledge-wise.

what you could do is put him on your foe list. that way, you'd not see his posts unless you choose to. or if someone quotes him in their post.

or you could stay and learn things from him.

but that's up to you. if you're done, you're done.

While I'm not one that commonly posts here, I do have an account that's been in place for over three years. I'm not new to CPAP therapy, online forums, or understanding how to do things like was asked of me here (to list my specific equipment). Sadly, I'm also not new to having to put up with people that are pompous, arrogant, and self-serving.

What IS new to me is seeing a community not only tolerate childish behavior like this, but to make excuses for it and support it. The Internet is a GIANT place, with a LOT of people that are truly willing to help while keeping the 'noise' at a minimum. This is not one of those places because of the way that everyone tolerates this bad behavior. And, for the record, this is not a situation where we "haven't exactly hit it off" as you stated - anyone that reads through threads will see how commonplace it is for him to throw his arrogant attitude at people over the littlest of things.

Take a moment to consider the following: You told me that I should ignore these actions because he is supposedly one of the two smartest people here. Would that be what you would tell a parent, sibling, significant other, or anyone else that you respected if he spoke to them the way you seem to be supportive of him treating me? If not, then ask yourself why it's ok to allow this. And, if it IS, then ask yourself why you would support his being disrespectful to them like that. I did absolutely nothing wrong. And, by your own admission, the area that I saw as being 'muddy' is one that you see in the same exact light. So, why is it ok then for him to have "looked down his nose at me" as he did?

In short, you've created this monster, you can deal with him.

Not sure what this discussion is about. I have an Autoset with smart start turned on. If I have to get up at night I manually turn off the machine before I take off my mask. When I get back in bed I hook the naked up, take a couple of breaths, the machine starts back up ......

this is an internet forum. this is not the same as real life. i get pretty tired of folks who make this false equivalency. i'm not here to argue with you. i merely suggested that you use a resource that could be valuable to you.

if you don't want to that, it's certainly up to you.

but i'm not going to go down this slippery slope.

have fun, whatever it is you end up doing.

If it is at random, my guess is that the machine is somehow (briefly) turning off. The other possibility is that there is a decent random leak in the breathing circuit.

I would suggest checking the following things:
a) Verify that the power connections (to the wall, at the brick, and the unit) are all snug. Try mocing them around a bit to see if the power cuts off.
b) Turn auto-off off (just in case that function is not working properly and it is shutting off when it is not supposed to)
c) The hose is well seated at both ends.
d) The gasket inside the humidifier tanks is in the proper spot, it is not damaged, and the lid is fully closed.
e) The humidifier tank is firmly and completely inserted.
f) There is no gash in the hose or mask cushion.
g) If using a nasal mask, you are not suddenly breathing from your mouth.

After that, time to get the machine checked....
