Pediatric sleep apnea and cpap

Post by Nv628 » Tue Dec 31, 2019 1:08 am

Hi There! My 6 year old recently started cpap treatment for severe OSA that was not helped after getting his tonsils and adenoids removed. While he is eager to use the cpap and will keep it on all night, we are having some issues with mask fit, sounds and him getting tangled! Does anyone know of any forums or support groups for parents of cpap kids? There are o few options for masks for him- we have 2 at home now and both start to leak above the bridge of his nose a few hours in and the sound wakes him up! Any guidance is greatly appreciated!

Does he have a pediatric size mask? Since he's only six years old, you (or your spouse) can check that he's got it on right.

Also, beware this runs in families! Mommy and daddy and any brothers or sisters should be screened!

A hose holder can help with the tangled hose. I picked one up for my son up from Amazon for about $10, the one I have is the "eliminate tangles CPAP hose holder." If your son is a side sleeper, a CPAP pillow might also help. It's pretty much a pillow with a chunk cut out of the side. You can find those on Amazon as well, or if you want to save a few bucks you can pick up a memory foam pillow and make one yourself. Another common cause of leaks is over tightening the mask. It is intuitive to tighten up the head gear when you feel a leak, make sure your son understands that over tightening of the mask can create leaks. Another trick to getting a good mask seal is to put the mask on turn on the machine, then gently pull the mask off his nose and reset it while the machine is running. What types of mask does he have and what pressure is his machine set to?
My son's sleep doc started him at a lower pressure gradully increasing as he became used to sleeping with the mask.

My biggest piece of advice is approach this process with the mindset that it may take time for him to make it thru the entire night, it took my son months but eventually he got there.

I suggest you contact Karen at Padacheek, to see if she has a mask liner for your son.
Mask liners silence and soften the feel of cpap cushion style masks.
You can even make some out of an old, clean t-shirt.
