Newbie Post - Sleep study/UARS?/CPAP trial

Post by spenny » Wed Oct 23, 2019 5:26 pm

Hi there

I am new to the forum and this is my first post.

After 37 years of sleeping like a baby, I began experiencing fragmented and unrefreshing sleep two years ago. I had a sleep study done shortly after. I will attach the results.

My sleep doctor suggested I try CPAP, so I did for a couple weeks. Admittedly I wasn't very compliant and couldn't imagine wearing a mask to sleep for the rest of my life. I also wasn't convinced that I had sleep apnea because a) my ahi was 4 and b) I was told only people with high BMI have sleep apnea and I am on the low end.

I spent the next two years becoming religious about sleep hygiene, trying gadgets, online cbti (sleepio) and running stimulus control therapy and sleep restriction therapy experiments with little to no improvement.

I recently became aware of Upper Airway Resistance Syndrome. I am excited because it seems to fit my symptoms.

Random facts about me:
Male 39 years
6'2 and 150 lbs
Triangle face (small jaw and mouth)
Deviated septum and nasal congestion in the morning
Teeth crowding issues
Signs of wear on front teeth (likely from grinding at night)
Cold hands
Low blood pressure

With this working diagnosis of UARS I have begun another CPAP trial with new motivation. I have been using it for a couple weeks now and will post some daily OSCAR results as soon as I learn how to do that.

For now I will post my sleep study results. I am wondering if anyone can confirm or deny that the results are consistent with UARS? Any other useful information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

The key thing for diagnosing UARS is the RERAs; respiratory effort related arousals.

If you add those indices for REM and non-REM RERAs to the AHI, that gives you your RDI number.

Seems to me that you have mild UARS.

You might check my thread, where my last post was lessons learned from my first few months (though my UARS is more severe; I basically got no REM sleep during my study).

I misread those arousal numbers (was on my phone!). Study says you have a few RERAs, but many more "spontaneous." I guess that's why they mention "mild sleep disordered breathing" and "insomnia."
