DreamWisp mask flaking in my hands

Post by light_sleeper » Fri Sep 20, 2019 3:27 pm

Hi everyone, I've run into a bit of a problem with my CPAP machine that has forced me to temporarily stop using it.

A little bit of background: I have been using my Philips DreamStation and DreamWisp for several months now without a problem. During the past two weeks, I went on a vacation to China and used the CPAP machine there and everything worked fine. When I came back from vacation (I live in the USA), I washed the equipment right away and left it out to air dry. That afternoon, some people came over to clean our house and I may have exposed my equipment to cleaning chemicals by leaving it out to dry. When I went to use the machine that night, it smelled of smoke despite no one in my family smoking. I decided to wash the machine and pass on using it that night. The next day, I washed everything again and I proceeded to let the tubing and the mask soak in a mixture of soap and water, which is what I usually clean my equipment with. However, when I went to go put on the mask that night, I noticed the mask was now an opaque white color instead of the translucent color it usually is. It's starting to flake off in my hands when I rub it. Here's a picture of what's going on:

What should I do in this situation? Do I simply need to get a new mask? Any advice is appreciated.

If the mask is flaking, I strongly recommend replacing it!

BTW< I went to China in 2003 and 2011, both times with a CPAP. The only issue was that the filter became filthy at a much faster rate than it did in the US.

When I got the white film, it seemed to be something like a hard water/soap deposit.
I washed it in HOT water and Dawn, followed by a distilled water rinse.

Does it have to be Dawn or can it be any other dishwashing soap? Any tips on how to wash my equipment properly (insides of tubes especially)? Thanks for the advice, I'll update you guys on if it works.

Any dish washing soap will work. I use Ivory liquid for our masks.

Anything you don't mind smelling... I like unscented dawn.

I get those deposits in my Dreamwear mask as it gets old. I thought they might be deposits from our very hard water. When I see those deposits I take it as a sign that it's time for a new mask (I use the same mask and pillow a year or more).

I use 7th Generation dish soap, it's unscented and clear, but I noticed that there are white crystalline flakes dried soap around the top of the bottle, too. It could be the soap.

Or, it may be that on your trip the water was very hard.

Do you have a spare? Are you due for a new mask?

I switched to using the Amara View mask for the time being. The funny thing is, I only used the Dream Wisp for maybe 3-4 months; I think it should last longer than that, right?

I wear my masks a long time because I don't have DME coverage and can't afford to replace them often. I only saw those deposits after perhaps a year or more of use.
