this is wrong, over simplified to the point of absurdity.breatherguy wrote:If CPAP pressure is too high, your brain doesn't tell your muscles of breathing to take a breath. You will have fewer events with an auto adjust CPAP.
What is a normal amount of Periodic Breathing?

Here - kick this idea around... you breathe out and dont automatically breathe in for x seconds - seems to be 2-3 seconds on my resmed - machine starts pushing.. respironics logs timed breaths, and percentage of periodic breathing is how often the machine has to push..
Is that too simple?
Doesnt indicate much except how much you would have irregular breathing if you didnt have the machine..

Actually periodic breathing is a respiration pattern where there is a waxing and waning of the air flow with the breaths.mike_winslow wrote: ↑Tue Feb 19, 2019 9:16 amHere - kick this idea around... you breathe out and dont automatically breathe in for x seconds - seems to be 2-3 seconds on my resmed - machine starts pushing.. respironics logs timed breaths, and percentage of periodic breathing is how often the machine has to push..

Has nothing to do with not breathing at all and has nothing to do with the machine pushing anything.
For PB to be flagged by Respironics machines there has to be a waxing and waning of that air flow lasting for at least 2 minutes.
Waxing and waning is normal. We all do it on occasion and it means nothing.
Not sure how long it has to last for ResMed flagging but I assume something similar to the 2 minute minimum.
Some PB is normal in everyone.
People start freaking out about PB because they automatically think CSR or Cheyne Stokes Respiration which of course can be an indication of some scary stuff going on but CSR is but one form of PB. Not all PB is going to be CSR.
The PB flagging is there as a safety net...machine flags the waxing and waning so that just in case there is a problem it gets evaluated by the medical care team. Most of the time the doctor can easily see that the PB isn't really an indication of a more serious problem and everyone gets to shrug their shoulders and move on.

Unfortunately, yes, and wrong.mike_winslow wrote: ↑Tue Feb 19, 2019 9:16 amHere - kick this idea around... you breathe out and dont automatically breathe in for x seconds - seems to be 2-3 seconds on my resmed - machine starts pushing.. respironics logs timed breaths, and percentage of periodic breathing is how often the machine has to push..
