New application for CPAP: Reduce lung movement during radiation therapy

Post by D.H. » Sun Aug 11, 2019 10:56 am

Here is a new application for CPAP. Normal breathing causes the movement within the lungs, making tumors of the lungs a "moving target." Use of CPAP reduces the movement, allowing for more precise delivery of the treatment.

another BS article. no matter how you think you do it, unless you hold your breath, if you are alive and breathing your chest and lungs are moving. one of the basics about cpap is that it splints your airway open so you can breath with your lungs.

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/26264628/ this looks to give more information about the original article. Unless they are lying it looks like there is a benefit in this circumstance.

Interesting. Wouldn't have helped me, they weren't targeting my lungs.

The article doesn't say the lungs don't move. It says that they move less when CPAP pressure is applied properly.

Who said anything about slowing down respiration? This is a quote from the article originally posted.
"From our perspective, two things happen when we connect patients to a CPAP machine- the tumor moves less while the lungs still expand. This means that we are able to better avoid treating healthy lung tissue. In cancer treatment, we always calculate the benefits of treating the tumor versus the harm of damaging healthy tissue. Using this technique, we are able to improve this ratio and give patients more benefit.”

Correct! It does not say they that there is less oxygen being consumed than otherwise. It simply says that the lungs are moving less, while presumably consuming the same amount of oxygen.

Your mistake is engaging with a troll who posts what he apparently considers to be funny nonsense in order to get a reaction...

Unfortunately, some people encourage that behavior, telling him that he's "funny".
