Detecting AHI events

Post by Heymj » Thu Jul 18, 2019 12:02 am

If I’m using nasal airpillows as a CPAP mask, would mouth breathing be detected as an AHI event? My machine is an airsense 10. I’m wondering because my AHI events per hour have increased with increased CPAP use per night. So when I was using for 3-4 hours per night, my AHI events were 5 or less. Now that I’m using CPAP for over 7 hours, my AHI events are over 10. I’m wondering if mouth breathing is the cause or if it’s something else.

Mouth breathing won't give you an apnea event UNLESS your mouth breathing is so bad that the therapy pressure is lost out the mouth instead of staying in the airway and holding the airway open preventing airway collapses and then the apnea happens.

You need to be monitoring your leaks. Mouth breathing will show up as a leak.

Also need to be monitoring what kind of events you are seeing flagged. Not all apnea flags are related to the airway closing off.
Central apneas can happen and those are just you not breathing at all.

You didn't say what kind of machine you are using but hopefully it is a model that shows detailed data.
There are 4 AirSense 10 models
AirSense 10 CPAP (doesn't show detailed data)
AirSense 10 Elite (full detailed data)
AirSense 10 AutoSet (full detailed data)
AirSense 10 AutoSet for Her (full detailed data)

If all you have is the AirSense 10 CPAP....very limited data but if you have one of the others with full data get the available software and see exactly what the leaks are doing and what kind of events are being flagged.
All explained in the Sticky in the top of the Announcements section .....Newbies please read before posting.
