Just diagnosed and sleep getting worse

Post by jamesw » Fri Jun 28, 2019 12:10 pm

I was Just diagnosed with sleep apnea. I am 4-8 weeks from getting cpap but in the last three weeks ive been getting worse sleep every week. An hour then wake over and over again maybe 4 hours a night this creates anxiety so hard to get to sleep as well now. Are there any tips to get to sleep easier or stay asleep or just have less anxiety. Is there anything Im missing? I'm thinking of using some melatonin tonight but other than that I'm out of Ideas.

welcome to the zoo. please read the link that lsat has provided.

each of us is just that tiny bit different in our equipment. and how we sleep.

in order to help you best, the experts here are going to need more info. if you would be so kind, start by filling out your equipment profile. that way, every time you post, your equipment will show up at the bottom of your post, as mine does below.

once the experts get more data from you, they can make suggestions geared towards your situation.

i know it's hard right now. but you can do this.

good luck!

With no details on your sleep study results, I can only speak in generalities. While you are waiting on your machine, it may help a bit to avoid back sleeping. It is not unusual for apneas to worsen with back sleeping due to the tongue collapsing back into the airway. Also, use a pillow that best keeps your neck in alignment and the chin not tucked, and doesn't encourage your lower jaw to drop. A firm flat pillow helps me with that. I had a sleep doc who once said a friend's stomach sleeping probably saved his life. This position keeps the tongue out of the airway. If you don't want to stomach sleep and like to side sleep, sleep with the front of your face a bit off the edge of the pillow. This will usually cause the edge of the pillow to collapse a bit and point the face toward the mattress, helping the tongue to fall forward instead of backward once relaxed. None of these are cures, but maybe can mitigate your issues enough to give you some relief as you wait. Good luck with things.

It may also help if you have a big "comfortable" recliner, you could try sleeping there, propped more upright. Sleeping on your back should be avoided if possible.

As you feel anxious about all of this and are finding it hard to sleep, make sure you don't try anything sleep aid wise that could make your apnea worse.

Like don't drink alcohol before trying to sleep to help take the edge off, as that could be bad. If you have any sleeping medication, you may want to look up if it could cause apnea to be worse before using it. You may be able to post it on the forum and there others with more experience who could weight in on if it's safe to use or not. Or see if you can phone your doctor or talk to one of the nurses and see if they can help with that.

I wish you the best and hope your wait will be over soon. Soon as you get set up with your equipment be sure to update us and we'll be happy to help.

If you have any sort of questions as to what questions to ask, of the doctor, or the DME before you pick up your equipment, now's the time to ask.

Best wishes,

Gryphon

Jamesw, I’m so sorry you’re feeling worse as you wait for your machine to arrive. Any chance your doctor or clinic can loan or rent you a machine until the new one comes?

In the meantime, try checking this list of scientifically backed recommendations for better sleep. I originally thought some of them sounded like baloney, but I was desperate and tried all of them. They actually helped, especially as I gave them a little time to settle in.

Finally, it might be a good idea to talk with your doctor about your experience of anxiety. For some people, medication can be helpful, and sometimes it is needed just for a fairly short period of time.

Please let us know how things go for you. And I hope you get your machine weeks early!
