Help me understand SleepyHead info

Post by WestWy » Mon Jun 17, 2019 6:02 pm

I have been using an ASV machine for approximately 1.5 months now and I am curious to know how to interpret the AHI graph in SleepyHead. What I don’t understand is that if I look at the “events” graph, it may show events of 10 seconds yet the AHI graph shows a red outline (box) of hours. The first AHI chart (below) shows a red outline going as high as 9 (I assume that means events per hours?) yet it does not show any red outline for the event around 1:00 whereas the second chart shows a 10 second event at 2:30 and a red box apparently encompassing an hours time - why does the AHI graph show a box for an hour when there was one event for the night? Would someone please explain how to interpret the AHI graph. Thank you.

The AHI graph goes by each 60 minute segment....so you had one event in that entire hour with the one hyponea. Duration of the actual event isn't a factor in the AHI graph.
Only the number of events are factors in the AHI graph and every 60 minutes it resets to zero.

If you had 3 events during a 60 minute session then it would be a block line at 3 on the graph for one 60 minute time frame.

The AHI graph is pretty much useless...you can tell how many events you had within a time frame by looking at the Events graph just as easily.

Do you sleep on your back (there's a reason)?

Actually, the events graph is what I have been paying attention to. I just started looking at the AHI graph and I didn't really understand it - thanks for the explanation.

Would you please explain the reason for this question? I don't understand the "there's a reason" comment but I would like to understand it.

To answer you question though; I try to sleep on my side because I notice that I have less events in that position but I almost always wake up on my back.

You answered your own question (and mine). Back sleeping provokes more events so people go great lengths sometimes to try and prevent it by wearing e.g. towel stuffed back packs, tied-on baseballs (doesn't apparently work well), foam wedges, etc... and all those hypopneas are less likely to show up, at least not in such numbers, if you can stay off your back as much as possible. Didn't mean to be mysterious tho', sorry!

The best thing you can do with the AHI graph is turn it off.

Gravity tends to make apnea worse when sleeping on the back, for a majority (not all) people.
