...cooking a pound of premium pork sausage, and laying down a gorgeous fond.
The fond lifted up into a batch of lip-smacking pepper gravy, and when I decanted the gravy, the stain was almost all gone...
Have to say, it's a bit unsettling to hear high-falutin' words like "fond" and "decant" in the same sentence with "sausage gravy". Makes me consider I should raise a pinky when I'm soppin'.

saw this on Reddit: https://old.reddit.com/r/KitchenConfide ... cast_iron/

I had a similar looking dutch oven that had something .... over browned in it long ago... no amount of scrubbing would get it white again.

It's white now, without *any* scrubbing.

I have to wonder how that stuff would do on cigarette infested silicone bits in a cpap.
i take it you're NOT using the expresso machine cleaner stuff?

I am using the espresso machine cleaner on the pan. as far as I can figure, it's similar, chemically, to oxyclean. (sodium percarbonate and sodium carbonate) I don't know if it's got more, or less sodium percarbonate in it.

I used oxyclean in the past to help destink silicone cpap bits.
ooops! i just figured a guy like you would be using the isopropyl alcohol and kosher salt mixture.

wonder why it has to be kosher slat?

Update.....BarKeepers Friend...well....if I had used it prior to the mess getting so caked on it might be a good choice.
It will clean it but it involves a LOT of elbow grease and much more than I want to muster up right now. I scrubbed half an hour hard and got an area about the size of a quarter looking half way decent. Way too much elbow grease is needed when things are as bad as I have let it become.

Next to try is the ammonia trick...and after that maybe I will order some of that stuff from Amazon.

If that doesn't work then I think I will just learn to love the blackened bottoms.
They are too expensive to replace just because of the ugly bottom and the inside non stick part is still perfect and easy to clean with no scratches. These are the high dollar cephalon with non stick and made out of the anodized stuff.
Ugly bottoms doesn't affect the cooking. It's just I see them because I have to hang the skillets...either that or redo the cabinet organization and hang some of the pots that have beautiful bottoms.

Sometimes my OCD gets me but sometimes I get it.

What are you talking about? cleaning pans, or cleaning silicone seals from inside the cpap?

alcohol doesn't work on the silicone seals because the cigarette stuff soaks into the silicone.. (I tried it)

for cleaning pans.

read further into the linked thread.

Dude. Just isopropyl alcohol and kosher salt. The iso cuts through resin like butter and the salt is an abrasive, it does the scraping for you. Shit rinses away cleanly in a couple of swipes under water."

figured THAT would be more up your alley.

AH.. Ok, now I'm with you :D makes sense now. I did read that, but I didn't try it in this case... there wasn't really any buildup left.

I don't think it would have worked in this case, since the stain was in the porcelain, I'd scrubbed and scrubbed, and tried things like boiling baking soda and such... hadn't gotten it out.

The kosher salt is used because it's rougher and more jagged than table salt.

Speaking of ammonia, when my mother wanted to clean her oven, she would purchase a bottle of household ammonia, pour it into a large bowl and then leave it in the closed oven over night. The next morning, she would simply wipe the inside of the oven with a damp cloth and everything would come off.

It was a "nonstick" pan, that was not any more, so I had nothing to lose.
The gravy was very tasty--I hid the last bit--for breakfast later.
