Cpap machine - how long till works?

Post by GilligP » Wed May 29, 2019 1:43 am

I have been using the machine for a month, no improvement still waking Unrefreshed in the mornings and more exhausted than when I was not using the cpap. Stopped using past week to recover but going back on it now. Doesn’t help that I have a long commute and work will only let me work from home one day a week.
How long has t taken people to get results from the machine?
Cpap rep has called and done a download which confirms the pressure is reacting to my apnea’s so it is working but not seeing it in how I feel.
Appreciate any comments

Maybe there is a medical problem not related to sleep apnea. Have you seen anyone besides the CPAP rep?

Download the Sleephead program (look at Pugsy's remarks section of her profile). Insert your machine's memory card and let the program retrieve your data from the card. Then post a typical night her so we can see your numbers.

Please state which machine - model, words on the front, etc. - you're using... just e.g. "Resmed" is not enough. And what mask do you use?

What are your pressure settings - very important and may be the issue.

As you learn more about this treatment you'll be able to ask for more definitive answers. They gave you a generic answer that doesn't tell you how well it is "working". It would be to your advantage to do as others have suggested and use the software to get specific data to make sure your treatment is optimized. So many "little" things can make a difference. One example is on an auto titrating machine the starting pressure can be too low for the machine's response to be as efficient as it could be. Machine data would let you know that, among other issues. Good luck with sorting things out. Wouldn't hurt to ask your provider for a copy of the report they based their answer on. Not sure how patient rights to medical records works in your part of the world.

If we assume your not having any difficulty with falling asleep or sleeping with this thing on your face blowing air down your throat then a month or two could be all you need to "feel results".

Now if any of it is giving you any trouble even making you not sleep quite as well as you used to even though it wasn't very good before then its gonna take months to get adjusted to your new friend and thats assuming all your settings are perfect and the experts here can help you make those adjustments.

It takes a while to get in the groove.
Most of us get there.
Some sooner--others later.
The key is to keep trying.
Find your strength, and hang on to it.

Yes, it is an individual type of thing, also depends if there are any other issues causing the tiredness- for me it's taken quite some time, but I believe the treatment is finally working for me, and it took changing to the ResMed - which works much better for me than the Phillips Respironics . . .

You didn't say what your pressure settings are and as I mentioned they can make all the difference.

thank you for all the replies
I am on a Resmed machine with humidifier - Airsense Elite. Its on auto setting so adjusts according to apneas. The rep calls every week and does a download and I can see it is working (you can see the apneas), I am down to about 3 per hour so that is good, just not getting the refreshed feeling in the mornings. Resmed AirtouchF20 full mask, just moved from Resmed nasal mask to full mask.

I can tell you that the first month was way worse and more tired then I've ever been. For it it was getting used to the thing on my face. I'm very sensitive to just about every touch or sounds or anything different than my normal.

The ResMed AirSense 10 Elite does NOT auto adjust the pressures as needed depending on the apneas it senses.
It is a fixed pressure machine...you would need the AutoSet model to have auto adjusting pressure capabilities.
You may need a slight pressure adjustment depending on what kind of apnea events you are showing that are averaging 3 per hour or so.

How many hours of sleep are you averaging?
Are those hours fragmented with very many wake ups?
Do you take any medications of any kind? If so, what?
Any other physical or mental health issues that might impact sleep or how you feel during the day.
Exactly what symptoms are you still having that you wished would go away?

The answer to "how long till it works" is elusive because it can vary a lot but we start with some questions and answers to see if anything obvious might be staring us in the face.
