Prednisone Question

Post by kbh209 » Sun May 26, 2019 11:07 pm

Has anybody found anything that counteracts with the insomnia (and anxiety) that Prednisone sets off at night? Any helpful tips would be much appreciated.

Maybe a bit more info would help... what is the prednisone for and when do you take it (in what form)?

It's not something asked here normally in relation to Cpap but your note makes it sound a bit 'usual', as if we would be familiar with the situation.

Are you sure you want to 'counter' it - are you sure it's even the problem? What has your doctor said?

It is absolutely normal with prednisone or any steroid actually. I just don't have a solution which is why I didn't answer.

I think this relates to another thread OP initiated. Back when I had to take a lot of prednisone for a long time my rheumatologist prescribed small doses of an anti-depressant to take before bedtime. I wasn’t depressed, this was just to help with sleep. It’d be good if OP could bring up the sleep issue in a doctor visit.

Every sleep problem possible and a lot that are impossible are regularly discussed and worked on here. Many achieve good results.

When I need to go on prednisone because of asthma attacks, I plan on not sleeping for the first night, and then only having brief naps until I go off of it. During a recent five day period of high dose (60 mg) daily, I did not sleep more that one hour at a time until I went off of the medication.

I've been on Prednisone since about 2006, 5 mg for my rheumatoid arthritis. I started having on and off insomnia since last year. A friend had given me a lavender essential oil to put on nightly to help combat the insomnia and also to help me during my nights of reducing my melatonin supplement from 5mg to 1mg. It seems that my body has built a tolerance to the lavender oil and melatonin, to where I'm back to taking two or three hours to get to sleep. I'm curious what alternatives to melatonin and lavender oil are out there, as far as homeopathic alternatives to prescriptions, so that I can start getting to sleep quicker and not be ripping my CPAP mask off in mid frustration in the middle of the night.

Have you tried e.g. 4 nights of melatonin and 1 off? I take it too, but find after a few nights (<1 mg) I need a night off because it kind of quits, but then works again afterward.

interesting. didn't know about that. trying melatonin myself. maybe i should be monitoring it's effects more closely.
people say i'm self absorbed.
but that's enough about them.

I would keep track of your own experience... might be 6 on and 1-2 off - see what works for you.

Try taking it as early in the day as possible.

if you mean the Prednisone, I take it in the mornings. If you mean the Melatonin, that's not the safest idea.
