New To CPAP / Sleephead Review

Post by Crime2 » Tue Apr 16, 2019 4:54 pm

Hi All,

I have been reading on here for about a month and have been using a CPAP for 2 weeks now. I downloaded Sleephead and would like to get some input if I need to make any adjustments or just feedback in general.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum.

How are you sleeping and feeling in general? That's more important than numbers IMHO.
If you are sleeping decently and feeling good I see no reason to change anything unless you just want to try something different to see what happens.

I sleep good for the most part. Still getting used to the mask so it takes me a little longer to fall asleep than before. When I first turn the machine on I feel like I am breaking very heavy and out of breath. After about 5 minutes that goes away. I do feel somewhat better but still sleepy on some days.

You are further along with things than I was at 2 weeks into therapy.
It takes a while for the body and brain to come to terms with the new normal way of sleeping.

Your AHI is nice and low.
Your leak numbers are well below large leak territory.
You are sleeping decently for the most part probably....at least you aren't saying you are waking up dozens of times during the night.
You didn't complain horribly about the mask and/or leaks...usually that is one of the first things we hear about.

I see no urgent need to go messing with any settings from what is shown on the report or what you say.
Give it some time and maybe a little later if you just want to play with the settings a bit just to see what happens you can do that...but there's no urgent need to change anything at this time that I can see.

Overall and excellent report for anyone....especially so for someone so new to therapy.
Heck, at 3 weeks I was still battling an AHI of 8.4 and my brain was waking me up every hour on the hour just to say "hey dude, do you know there is an alien plastered on your nose"...and I was quite comfortable with the mask. It was just everything was so new and it took me a while for the newness to become my new normal.

Good job.

Thanks for the reply’s!!! The mask still pisses me off every night when I go to bed but I know I have to do it so it is what it is. About the worst part is when I roll over and the hose rubs on the nightstand. It’s like nails on a chalk board to me.

try wearing it when NOT in bed. or even hooked up to the machine. wear it while watching tv or doing something else. your subconscious is convinced there is an alien on your face. KILL IT !! KILL IT !! is what your lizard brain is screaming.

but in time, you get used to it.

Get a hose holder thingy. It will make your entire setup look even more like some kind of hospital, but your sleep will thank you.

(I just chose the cheapest one I could find in a search, but I think I have this same one or equivalent.)

If the hose is noisy rubbing on anything you can get a hose cozy or make one so it isn't so noisy.
An old sock with the toe cut out and snaked over the hose to the offending area might be enough.

Waking Up on the Hour Every NIght

Post by AmyGrace » Sun Apr 21, 2019 11:41 am

I am about two months into the use of my CPAP machine. I am hoping someone who has been following the messages can share with me about the reason for waking up every hour AND if anyone has found a solution. Before the CPAP I woke up maybe once or twice. I had NO apnea symptoms other than a large neck. Turns out, I had severe apnea. That said, now I wake about every hour on the hour all night while using the CPAP, giving up and getting up about 6am. I have no problems with my breathing mask and device. No trouble going to sleep or getting back to sleep when I wake. I do make a point to look at the clock, because I have been recording my progress. Back in the day, I was a 9 hour a night sleeper. I did just read about an interesting study that some believe this waking is the result of our bodies having been under siege for decades to keep us alive. Chemicals were developed on the ready to "keep us alive" in the night when apnea appeared. Now, it continues to raise it's head in ready defense and need, which somehow wakes us up. That said, I am hoping to hear more definitive reasons and to hear positive outcomes from others, like me, who have or are now experiencing multiple wake ups
