Unplug that modem
Re: Unplug that modem
Thanks napstress. Apparently, there are wireless cell phone modems for CPAP as well as wired modems.
Respironics lists a "wired flow modem" and a "wireless flow modem."
If you've got the wireless one, there's no extra lightning problems with having it there.

Oh, and it had a barcode on the inside with the word "Encore" beneath it.

Re: Unplug that modem
The ResMed one sends data back to their servers, where the DME and potentially your doctor can see the same reports you get in the ResMed desktop software, but via the web. Mine is a wireless modem on the S9 Elite.

Re: Unplug that modem
I had a cool experience today with (what I now know for sure is) the modem. I called Apria to see if they had received my sleep dr's prescription for changing the pressure levels. I expected to have to run out to Apria to exchange my SD card for a new one. But the RT simply had me press a button on the modem at home and changed the levels from the computer at his office. Took less than a minute from when he started describing what I should do on my end to when it was completed.

Re: Unplug that modem
How often do your modem's call in? Mine is next to a clock radio and seems to call in every couple of hours. A lot more frequently than I would have anticipated.
Re: Unplug that modem
My DME said that the Resmed wireless modem which plugs into the back of the machine only transmits compliance data, nothing else. They only can get the detailed data off of the data card which I would have to bring in.

Re: Unplug that modem
Not sure if it differs by machine, but I have PR S1 and my DME has viewed detailed incidents data while we discussed it.

Things I don't have:
A modem.
A wired phone.
An irrational fear of lightning, power spikes or blue painter's tape.

Re: Unplug that modem
Good point, I should have specified that mine is a wireless modem...thus when it "calls home" I hear the interference on the clock radio next to it.

Re: Unplug that modem
I unplugged the modem about 3 weeks ago. No one has called me to complain...

http://www.snopes.com/horrors/techno/phone.asp"This danger is small and the number of such strikes relatively low. Even so, as thunderstorms approach, some people opt to unplug costly electrical appliances from power outlets (lightning strikes to power lines can send catastrophic discharge into one's TV) as well as uncouple phone lines from computers and modems."
Re: Unplug that modem
From my research, newer CPAP modems are in the circuit board, deep inside the unit. They are moderately complicated to disconnect without some electronics / circuit board skills. Then here are some that have modem modules that can be easily removed, usually in plain site or inside an access panel on the unit. Some older CPAP units are 'wired' and plugged into a wall phone-jack. You can use search engines to finds some of these but it would be nice if some of our technical wizards in the forum could post step-by-steps, My knowledge is only based from what I could find on the web.

Re: Unplug that modem
Your "research" is wrong.
Never heard of such a thing, not saying it doesn't exist, but... not in the last 10 years, and before that, no CPAP 'phone home'.
You shouldn't believe everything you read 'on the web'.
