Most encouraging night ever !!

Post by JaxTom » Thu Apr 11, 2019 8:10 am

I've been using CPAP for close to 7 years. Don't post all that often here. 7 years ago I did the sleep tests, got put on CPAP, got centrals, and over the course of several months went from BiPAP to Backup machine to an ASV. (Resmed S9). Once I got on the ASV my AHI scores were always below 1.0. I also felt tired all the time and had big leak %'s. Usually 40-60-% every night.

My settings according to Sleepyhead back then were: EPAP 9.0, PS 4.0-15.0.

A couple months ago my machine said life of drive motor was exceeded, so I started working with new doctor and medicare to get new machine (Resmed AirCurve 10). Sleep study said I needed to be on PS 4 and 14/18 for my pressures. Went in yesterday for my one month followup. I've averaged 4.8 AHI (mostly centrals), still with massive leak rate. And a lot of dry mouth, When I mentioned the dry mouth the doc suggested it(and the leaks) could be the result of my high pressure which he described as being on "the high end of the bell curve"). So he set me up with variable settings.

New settings (non ASV machine): PS 4 over 6.0 to 18.0,

What a difference!! Until right as I got up my pressure never went above 8.0. My large leak rate was 0.01. (nasal pillows), no dry mouth, slept well all night long. My AHI was 2.82 (mostly central). This variable setting (for at least one night) has made a world of difference,

Second night was great also. I didn't check it in Sleepyhead but my AHI was 2.2 according to MyAir with 20/20 on leaks. MY score was a 99 and only because I had a couple naps so they dinged me for "removing the mask".

The lower pressure I assume has to be easier on my sleep... I hope to feel some beneficial effects soon.

My wife says she can't even hear the machine anymore.

Do you really care what your "score" is? The most important thing is to sleep well with a low AHI.

Just mostly that it's the quick recap on how well I did. I have one of those wrist sleep trackers. I'm firing it up and using tonight to see what it says about my sleep (REM, Deep, etc.). Even with identical AHI's I would think that a gentle breeze through your nostrils has to be better for your sleep than a fire hose of air.
