Daytime anxiety after 3wks of BiPAP

Post by Pfcsix » Fri Mar 15, 2019 9:14 pm

After 3 weeks of therepy on a resumed airsense 10, I started havin anxiety and panic attacks during the day. I have never had anxiety before this and I’m not on any medication. The anxiety seems to affect me more than not and my stomach is all messed up. I didn’t have any issues starting therepy especially since I knew years ago that i had sleep apnea and I’m 41. I was planning on getting it taken care of already and then started sleeping really bad and wakiking several times a night and started having daily headaches and brain fog. My sleep study showed 54 apnea’s an hour and my oxygen level was dropping to 70 at night. After 2.5 to 3 weeks on therepy I felt back to normal. And then all of a sudden the daily anxiety started. My settings are 14-20. I really don’t know what to do. Could my settings need raised or lowerd to optimize my therepy and could it be causing this anxiety. My ahi’s are anywhere from 1.5 up to 17 but my average is around 7. Any advise or help would be greatly appreciated. My dr just wants to put me on an antidepressant and that’s not something I want to do if there is another cause considering it just started after therapy and was never an issue with me in the past.

The Resmed AirSense 10 [something] isn't even remotely a "BiPAP".

welcome aboard. sorry to hear you're having such a rough time.

in order for folks to help you, we are going to need more info, please. start here-

not everyone has the same cpap journey. we all have different machines and masks and like that. once the experts here know more, they'll be able to tailor their advice to you.

in the meantime, you might want to spend time with the mask on, but not sleeping. do something else earlier in the evening. read a book, watch tv or listen to music with the mask on. it will give your brain time to relax and get used to the "alien" on your face.

good luck!

Your body may have spent years having to make extra panic juice to jar you into breathing again during apneas. If your apneas are now addressed, your body now has extra panic juice and looks for any excuse to release it. Eventually your body will adjust to good sleep, if your settings are optimized.

I considered the anxiety I felt to be a good sign. Eventually my body adjusted to good sleep and I no longer feel that anxiety that I dealt with early in my CPAP journey.

It can be a roller-coaster ride. But you are strapped in. Hold on. Just make sure those settings are optimized.

Thank you, I didn’t think I was going crazy, and I wondered if it was because I’m now sleeping good and my body needs to adjust. The dr wasn’t much help and just wanted to throw me on pills for the anxiety and the side effects of the pills are not good. Since I never had anxiety issues ever, and the therepy was the only thing that’s changed in my life, I was hoping it would just pass. I also lowerd my setting from 20 to 19 last night and my ahi dropped to 1.4 so I think my setting might have been a little higher than it needed to be but we’ll see how I do again after tonight at that setting.
