DreamStation BiPAP Pro or ResMed AirCurve™ 10 S BiLevel Machine

Post by Kroldor » Mon Mar 11, 2019 2:34 pm

Hey all,

The company doing my bilevel machine offers the DreamStation BiPAP Pro or ResMed AirCurve™ 10 S BiLevel Machine. Neither one is auto.

Any recommendations for which one I should choose?

My pulmonologist said they only deal with this company, and the company says they only have the 2 options. I'm not sure what to do. Do I need to find a new doctor? Honestly, I'm not sure how much longer I can wait to start treatment before I go nuts.

What kind of insurance do you have?
Is it an HMO kind of thing?

The doctor can't force you to use someone you don't want to.

Have you checked with your insurance to see who else in your area they have a contract with?

I have PPO with Aetna.

I didn't ask my insurance about contracts, but I asked what they covered. I think they'll cover basically any bipap machine. I have my paper prescription. Should I start calling local DMEs with it?

How much difference does an autoset machine make?

With the fixed bilevel machines you have to use the same pressure all night long and it can't vary if your pressure needs vary.
It's quite common to need more pressure if you are on your back or during REM but you may not be on your back all night and REM only makes up about 20% of the night.

My OSA is 5 times worse in REM and often I see pressures around 16 cm when in probable REM...the rest of the night I might get by great with 9 or 10.
If I were to use a fixed pressure machine I would have to use 16 cm all night just to take care of the REM stuff.
Let me tell you that 9 or 10 is a whole lot easier to deal with than 16 cm.

Insurance companies pay by billing code and the billing code for a fixed bilevel machine is the same as for a bilevel that will auto adjust.
DMEs just like to dispense the fixed pressure because it is a little cheaper wholesale to them and they get the same amount of money from the insurance company based on that billing code...not the machine brand or features.

What does your RX say?

My RX says 20/16.
